D&D 5E Killed Me a Lawful Stupid Paladin

DMing, If for some reason a course comes up that the player, REALLY should not try, I like the phrase, You can try, but it may be suicidal. The exception is if it it's a hazard that they haven't detected, (which should be survivable anyway) or the intended last session of the campaign. That said, if the guy got to 5th without having an idea how hard things hit, then as described he was insisting on his right to get beaten up. Perhaps the rest of the party might have chimed in with some way to knock him overboard fog cloud the pirates, or otherwise bail their comrade out? Bottom line think D&D for Dummies. If something is very likely going to be fatal, make very clear that this outcome is a real possibility.

It wasn't a pirate boat it was an emissary from one of the great powers.

They were flying the imperial flag, house flag, diplomatic flags and told them they were elite guards from the finest gladiators.

Then why the player insist on a duel? What was his "reason".

Lawful stupid... pffft! :cautious:

You mean LAWFUL GOOD AWESOMENESS!!! :D

Anyway, the player's choice to challenge someone to a fight has nothing to do with being lawful or a Paladin, any stupid player with any character concept could have made that call--bad as it is I suppose...

The bigger question is why did you allow the fight to even happen? ;)

Douse the Flame of Hope. It is not enough to merely defeat an enemy in battle. Your victory must be so overwhelming that your enemies’ will to fight is shattered forever. A blade can end a life. Fear can end an empire.

or

Fight the Greater Evil. Faced with a choice of fighting my sworn foes or combating a lesser evil, I choose the greater evil.

No Mercy for the Wicked. Ordinary foes might win my mercy, but my sworn enemies do not.

I would also say that under the circumstances as described, this was not a "good" action. Challenging someone to the death because they were what, bored? That's evil.

I feel like I'm missing something, but from what we've been told this has nothing to do with being lawful, good, or a paladin.

Player choices and actions have consequences. If you decide to challenge someone to a duel to the death for no good reason, and that someone has a champion to fight for him, well then....

Sorry, the "good" in my post was more to simply reference that I still feel Paladin's should be lawful good... not just "whatever". Didn't mean for it to imply the player's choice as "good" morally.

Sure. Have the NPC challenger knock the PC out with one hit. Fight over. Maybe the player will learn a lesson about doing stupid things. shrug

Anyway, I don't really care about the thread--just wanted to say Lawful Good Awesomeness. My work here is done. :)
