D&D 5E (2014) Killed Me a Lawful Stupid Paladin

Then why the player insist on a duel? What was his "reason".

Lawful stupid. He was demanding an apology for the ship cutting them off (despite they won that and kinda cut them off).

I've been allowing history checks to identify the flags various ships fly.

DC10 for major powers and pirates of reknown up to DC 20 for obscure stuff.

I'm using earth map, the Elves rule the UK, humans Iberia and Mali, Dragonborn/Kin 13 colonies (Arkhosia) and the Tieflings in Mexico.

The Elves and crimson fleet are the major public villains with the yuan ti the behind the scene types.

Generally I try and create little events where the sailor background character gets to make a skill check on occasion since he bought into the theme the most.

Theme being happy pirates of the caribbean.

I don't understand what part of the story relates to the paladin's alignment. As others have said, jackass player, but it doesn't feel like he was trying to play a particular alignment.

Or was the player otherwise playing to the traditional paladin trope, and so the OP enjoyed killing him?

I'm confused.

Didn't enjoy killing him, I just didn't care.

My players describe me as a LN DM. Won't go out of my way to kill them won't lift a finger to much to save them from themselves.

What will be will be.

In a time of where Dueling is common, and the political idea that a slight to one's appearance, is the same (or worse) than an actual assault ....then the player's actions might be reasonable. The United States had a Vice President shoot an Ex Treasury Secretary in a duel.

If you were sending up Warning Flairs, and the guy proceeded...then a well justified beat down was called for. I don't think you had to kill the player though.
Subtle hints don't work for some people. Sometimes you have to just flat out say,
"Your character knows without a shadow of a doubt that they will die....do you proceed with the duel?"

I wasn't 100% sure he would lose.

Chewed through 80/112 hp, if he knew what he was doing could have won it.

He cast shield of faith and tried to tell me with a poo eating grin it's up to me to make him roll concentration rolls for his spell.

Told him point blank if he's cheating like that I'll assume concentration is lost on his spell effects.

One of the other players was gonna haste him but kinda forgot. Probably would have won.

He rolled really well on stats and was using pollarm master and shillelagh, quarterstaff and charisma to hit and damage via shillelagh.

He wasn't rolling concentration rolls, forgot to use lay on hands and think he just provoked the fight because he built a one trick pony character.

Last week had 4 encounters and he didn't bother buying a bow or other missile weapon and one of the encounters was ranged.

Seems to like going nova and wanting to rest.

I agree, avoid killing players at all costs. The legal system would likely give you loads of problems and that’s such a bother.

No you don't get plot armor vs basic stupidity. You learn the hard way in my games. To paraphrase the diplomat

"these are my elite guards drawn from our finest gladiators, pick one they're all the same".

I wasn't planning an encounter it was basically a skill check for the sailor and world building as the diplomat was delivering a join us or else type message.

Diplomat didn't even have a name. Background event and a way for the sailor to show off.

It was to set up next week's session.

This was also the player who wanted a heavy armor forge cleric of an aquatic God after being told light and medium armor probably better and wanted an aquatic race when he found out there was some underwater stuff.

Daaaang, I would have just killed the character. You run one hard times campaign if you take it out on the players. (Yikes emoji)

I didn't encounter was totally avoidable and I was sending up signal flags to not do it. The other players were telling him not to do it.

On messenger during the week he got told point blank not to attack the flagship for last week's game (finishing up the minor details).

He's played AD&D, reminds me of the cavalier just charge the biggest thing you can.

He's done that every session or wants to.

Also got told "I don't care if you get yourself killed. I do care if you get others killed".

It’s about now I jump out of the thread, embarrassed the deadpan humor of the age old confusion about “killing players vs. killing characters” was missed because explaining the joke kills the joke.
