D&D 5E "The problem with 5e" is the best feature - advantage

Advantage that doesn’t stack encourages people to get stuck in.

Now what would be good is not stacking advantage, but allowing people to spend advantage to do more complicated things.
  • Sacrifice advantage to be more precise with a hit - roll the weapon damage again and add it.
  • Sacrifice advantage to knock the enemy prone or disarm them if you hit on the attack.
  • Sacrifice advantage to move both of you 5 feet in one direction if you hit.
  • Sacrifice advantage to give a friendly character within 5’ advantage instead.
This is actually quite clever. Would love it WotC would play with this. Give us more options in play.

Ah... shameless plugs. Gotta love 'em. ;)
He's got a point. People spend so much effort looking past the fact that (dis)advantage is a crude blunt instrument trying to fix it without stopping to consider how many of advantage's problems the "fix" keeps in place just because it makes a badly overapplied mechanic slightly less bad

I suppose it depends on if you feel it needs "fixing". Like others, I feel the advantage concept is probably the best contribution 5E has made to D&D as a whole. You call it crude and blunt, I call it simple and elegant. 🤷‍♂️

It is both. It just depends what you're looking for in your game. The OP is looking for something more nuanced. That's OK. For those who feel otherwise, this probably isn't the thread for them. :)

It's not that advantage is a bad mechamnic to include in the toolbox, 5e's problem with advantage is that ot threw out so many other tools in the toolbox & only left advantage/expertise which are crude as a result of being completely incapable of fine grained adjustments & things like supporting character growth

Fair enough. I felt the only fixing it really needed is to allow it to stack. My argument about changing it so it offers a bump in terms of some die roll or another added to the d20 is it messes with bounded accuracy. If that isn't an issue for the person seeking a "fix", than have at it.

Other mechanics still exist, they just accomplish different things IMO. Spells such as Bless and features such as Bardic Inspiration grant bonuses which are random, others such as the Archery Fighting Style grant a flat +2 bonus. But, your point is taken in the loss of granularity. For example: the difference in a flanking or side attack versus a rear attack where you are unseen by your target. Would attacking from behind offer a great benefit than attacking from the side? IIRC in prior editions it was a +1 bonus (side) and +2 (rear) or maybe +2 and +4, respectively. With advantage they are basically equal. Of course, I think the greater issue is the loss of the Rear AC calculation (no Dex, no Shield) which would make the difference--but that is a different issue.
