D&D 5E Price Increase on D&D & MtG coming

So wages have increased on average by 15% in the UK since 2014. It seems bizarre to me that we would expect costs not to also rise. Inflation is pretty much inevitable in this day and age. So by not increasing the price of books in real terms they are decreasing in price.

WOC is well within their rights to maintain the GP% on their books. In fact for long term sustainability it’s a mandate.

They could double the price and it would still be the cheapest hobby I’ve seen pound or dollar per hour.

WOC execs are no doubt bonused on business growth, successful business = sustainable D&D. They can take my money if that’s what they ensure.

U.S. workers aren't so lucky, in general, but I'm sure I couldn't say why there is a difference, for decorum sake.

Averages are only averages but it’s looking pretty consistent annual increases in the US.

Pay rises here are up to 30%. Close friends and family have had 8-13%.

Depends what type of job you have. Wife's workplace seems to look after here in that regard.

Alot of places tie rises to CPI (consumer price index) so the minimum byouvget is in lone with inflation sobyou need a promotion or get an additional rise to really get ahead.

That would be reasonable if they weren't reporting rising profits as well. If the rising costs are causing them to lose profits, then raising prices is not only reasonable, but necessary. Here, they announced hiking the MSRP right after announcing record profits. Clearly rising costs have not been hurting them.

There are several costs that have gone up recently. What was sold over the past few quarters and such were printed at earlier times, and in many cases, already were at the warehouses and other locations.

Wood costs (books and cards are paper) have shot up through the roof. Transportation costs (not just on shipping, as fuel prices and trucking prices have risen, so have shipping costs risen on land transport) have risen all across the board.

The new items being printed cost more to print and to ship at this point. This price increase probably isn't something that is going to be drastic, but a small incremental cost to hopefully bring in similar profit margins in relation to the rising costs.

What should alarm people FAR more is the WHY this is happening. My OWN personal take is that this is a reflection of the price increases occurring all over right now. Many say the prices will go back down. They may...to a small amount but from the corporate veiwpoint (from what I see) the smart guys over at Hasbro's economic forecasting are saying that much of it is going to remain high for the foreseeable future. The price increase means the prices will probably rise permanently. This is because they do NOT see a rosy future of prices returning to what they were, but several of the price increases remaining, which also cause publishing and transportation of the gaming materials to be more expensive to produce.

It is a sign I think you will see occurring elsewhere in corporations and businesses. It's a sign that they are NOT seeing that the prices will return to what they were two years ago...and that prices may remain high for the foreseeable future on ALL items...or at least many of the items we have seen price increases on recently (food included).

Anyone with half a brain could work this out.

3 years or so of Covid with a decade or so of economic disruptions.

Things are relatively normal here but we've been told to expect 5 years of it. 1.25 years so far.

Hate the game, not the player.

Oh, I do. I really do.

You raise prices AS your costs increase. You don't wait 3-6 months. Their cost increase is right now, and has been there for the past 6 months.

Everyone is increasing their prices right now. Have you been shopping lately? It doesn't matter what the product is. Inflation is here, right now, across most industries. The Consumer Price Index just jumped 5.4%, the biggest jump since 2008.

Yeah, I get it. I've been in business as a Comic and Game retailer for almost 28 years. I understand how it works, and it's across the board, I know. (Oh don't I know!)

I can't help it if I feel that "We just made the most money EVER! Now YOU get to pay more!" comes off a bit cruel when ALL of my expenses are jacking up all at once.

Again, I understand it, I just don't like it. I'm not too worried about it, as these things go (Magic and D&D going up is quite frankly, the least of my current concerns). But hey, that's what we're talking about here, so that's why I shared my opinion on it.

D&D is increasingly getting unappealing. I already preordered and couldn't cancel them, so this likely won't effect them, as its through amazon. Still I doubt I will.be doing much more business with them anyways.
Hmm, haven't change prices of their books since they came out in 2014 even though inflation means both their costs are higher and even if their profits were the same what they could buy with them is less, but now that they are responding to an external pressure affecting the whole industry they are "unappealing"?

Sorry, that's some of the most entitled claptrap I've heard.

Prices go up. Inflation is a real thing. Singling out a company for responding to rising prices is ignorant to reality. But then going on a public forum to trumpet it is childish and, dare I say it, "unappealing".
