Glove of Storing too powerful?

The way I'm viewing it is that spells are like a wine stain on a shirt sleeve, wine is its own item, and the stain can be removed from the sleeve, but while it is on there, the stain is part of the item.

I agree that it is too powerful for such a cheap item and would not allow it to work that way in my game, but I think that is how it works as written. My answer would be to simply house rule it to the position you take and make spell durations an explicit exception to the stasis.

Oh yeah, I'm not arguing that what I'm saying is 100% correct by the rules; I'm pretty sure what you are saying is probably the most rule accurate. I'm just looking at it like Caliban stated and trying to reduce the amount of rule abuse for so cheap of an item, and I don't think my rationalization is too much of a stretch if I have to defend my position against my players :).

Wow. I certainly never expected this to turn into five pages in under two days!

I think that, balance-wise, for my next campaign I will rule that durations continue on stored items. I do agree with the camp that says that this isn't the case, because I can logically see the reasoning behind it, and it is that reasoning that made me allow thei use in this manner to begin with. However, for a mere 2,200 gp, I just can't see it happening. Heck, that's only 4,400gp if you add it on after making another type of glove (such as gloves of Dexterity). That just isn't enough payout to warrant infinite duration spells.

A few other points were raised.

1) Someone mentioned that I should go back and reread spells.

I think you may have misconstrued my remark about getting a +11 weapon. I did not mean that the weapon has a +11 to hit and damage, I meant that you could easily get a weapon with a total of +11 in abilities: +5 enhancement, keen (+1), Flaming Burst (+2), Shock (+1) and any other +2 bonus you'd care to actually pay for. That would mean for 20,500 gp (18,300 or so for the +3 weapon and 2,200 for the glove) you've gained yourself an item which is illegal to buy, and would cost 242,000gp if you could even think about buying it.

2) A couple of people mentioned storing being a standard action. The DMG erratta on WotC's site clarifies that storing and retrieving is a free action.

3) Someone mentioned storing and retrieving a shield. I would disallow that strategy because a hield has to be readied. Shields are strapped tot he arm of the user generally, making it more difficult than simply having one reappear in your hand.

Thanks all!

Sorry, that was me. I misread you. ;)

Thanks all!

You're welcome!

I always saw the stasis effect as for Flaming weapons or Sonic weapons that activate on command... not to "hold in stasis" spell durations... just rule that spell duration doesnt stop...

I suppose that but stasis they meant to add "as per the spell Temporal Stasis".
But this does not say anything about what happens with spells cast upon the subject. I'd rule that they last for their normal duration, even if the subject they have been cast upon is unchanged.

You also need to look up how bonuses stack. Different enhancement bonuses (the +'s in magic weapons) do not stack. You use the highest applicable, i.e. +5.

Read through all the spell descriptions, and you will notice how, for example, Greater Magical Weapon is capped at +5.
So if I get magically poisoned can my lvl 16 wizard buddy spend 5,000g and cast Temporal Stasis on me, then after the magic of the poisons duration has worn off dispel magic Temporal Stasis.

He's a really good buddy and I'm sure he wouldn't won't to see me sick. Gold is just shiny metal after all, friendship is what really maters.

Ah, yes, and in regards to the glove from 20 years ago...(Well..19...but who's counting)...

I would have ruled it took a natural 20 DEX roll to even use correctly. In that way, it was FAR underpowered.

Why?

Have you ever tried snapping with gloves on...Good Luck getting a snap with those on.
