Funny thing is that, in many jurisdictions, those plate frames are illegal because you are not permitted to block any portion of the plate from view. Then again in Ontario, Canada, somehow people are getting away with using smoked and polarized plate covers that can't be read at a distance of a few car lengths or even at all, after dark. Most have bought them under the mistaken impression that the cameras that take pictures of the plates, for toll highways, can't see past them. Truth is those cameras see the plates better than the human eye. Or so I was told by a friend who worked on the original setup of the 407ETR, in the Greater Toronto Area. Not board related, but something I wonder about every day when I'm out driving:
Why do so many people use the license plate frames that the car dealership sends them? In many states, doing so means that, at some point, your actual license plate arrives in the mail, you take off the dealer frame to remove the temporary tags, attach the permanent tags and then willingly affix what is basically an advertisement for a car dealership to their vehicle.
Do that many people have strong positive feelings for the business that sold them their car? In Southern California, it looks like at least half of the drivers on the road are using dealer license plate frames, instead of spending a few bucks to get something else (I have a plain black frame on my plates, personally) or just using nothing at all.
(He also knew that the original cameras weren't fast enough to reliably take a picture of the plate on a vehicle that was travelling faster than 160Kmh/100MPH and always rode his motorcycle under them at around 180 Kmh)
