There are a few situations where that's an accurate assessment, eg being a contestant on many game shows. Unless there's a social component involved that rewards cooperation and civility, being nice is irrelevant to your final reward there.

Usually the bigots around here are much more subtle with their hatred. That guy didn't even try to hide anything.
That Guy: "Hello, I'm a giant swollen bigot! I'd like to talk about why (marginalized group of people) are ruining the hobby!"
Morrus: "Um, no."
That Guy: "What's the matter? Can't handle my hott take?"
Morrus: "I'm not sure what you expected, but..." (bans him forever, locks the thread)

My usual habit is to peruse current events headlines, then science and tech news, then come here as a sort of palate cleanser.
But every now and then is a day that I kinda wish I did the reverse.

Yeah, I get no real value out of it. Global News is meaningless to me the individual, it does nothing positive for me, and is just a drain on my already strained mental health.
Problem is, the brain of today is addicted to ever more information, and when the hobby stuff slows, it begins to ask for more, anything to keep that flow of data going, and...oh heres an article, oh, I wish I never read that, and I get to carry that with me for a few days until I forget...great.
