It's not my fault. It's the fault of the game designers that make all the games that suck, and all the terrible people who are playing at the tables I join.

Unrelated to the above: I know I'm always going on (and on (and on)) about different media being different, but there are reasons TV show opening credit sequences are like thirty seconds.

I think this may be US only? In the UK self check-outs don't seem to be going anywhere
In here they seem to be still going strong. Truth is, they are fast and you avoid the awkward moment with the bagger when all they do is move your purchase a few centimeters because they no longer have bags to do any bagging with.

We have a local/regional chain (Market Basket) which doesn't do self-checkout at all. Their 12 item or less express lanes are pretty good. They're known for focusing more on employee wages, development, and careers than other supermarkets.

I had the Family Ties theme song leap to mind unbidden, and YouTube confirms it's more than a minute long. I remember that being interminable when I was a kid. Cheers was also just over a minute. I see All in the Family was a little under.

Yeah, that's annoying. I don't need to go through a checker when I'm buying five things.
I can see going back to checkers being a loss-prevention thing, but most of the places around here that have self-checks, don't have them set up well for people to take carts through, so there's probably also some efficiency being lost, there.

But yes, standing in line behind someone buying 107 things, when you have a pint of ice cream slowly melting in your hand, is ... annoying.

There's a local organic chain we go to that's similar.

At one point, sometime around 2001, I clocked a bunch of the opening credits sequences for hour-long shows, and they were all like exactly 30 seconds. I remember seeing something much shorter shortly thereafter, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a thing that evolved over the decades.

Related: Making an effective piece of music 30 seconds long is difficult.
