    Has anyone else changed this around? I agree it used to be far too long, but now it seems far too SHORT. I was thinking of saying these spells will last for two encounters, as long as they take place in the same day. Thought? Would one encounter work better?

    As I stated in my original post, the only reason he chose to quit using it was because he didn't want to pay the gold required (as per the DMG) to upgrade it. So you are correct, there was no reason he couldn't have found a way to get one as he wanted, except that he wanted it giftwrapped.

    What are the overall, longterm effects of the alternate XP progressions in Unearthed Arcana? The one with the alternate chart seems to slow things down a good bit it the middle, which I like, but does it make things much much slower at higher levels (15+), which I am a -little- leery of?

    The thing that balances this IMO is that they are very uncommon weapons, which means to keep up with Damage Reduction or to have special abilities or whatnot, the PC has to PAY for it all. You are not going to find +2 Spiked Chains lying around so the character has to pour his money into that...
