i keep getting coup de graced by monks

Think about it like this: A paralysed person cannot move. They are absolutely stuck in place immobile. Sometimes they can't even think clearly anymore. A stunned person is knocked silly. Think of it like that feeling you have when you stand up too fast and all the blood goes out of your head...

    Collateral damage

Eh, thanks to hardness the dagger will so rarely be able to damage anything interesting I wouldn't even bother thinking about it. Now, if you were slashing at someone who was standing right in front of an expensive tapestry, now that's interesting.

    Collateral damage

Thanks Nifft. That is at least part of the intention. My players are far too willing to just stand there and slug it out. I try tripping, grappling, disarm, etc. Their complaint "It's not epic!" News flash: Neither is standing still and taking turns slapping each other. Oh, I've made another...

    Collateral damage

Hrm...well, of course there are going to be plenty of cases where you don't have any possibility of actually harming the object. In that case I wouldn't even bother considering it. On the other hand, I rarely have fights that aren't big and dramatic. Not a fan of "random encounters." I'll...

    Collateral damage

I've been thinking about just how much damage people tend to do to their environment in movies and books. People smash into tables, trolls take out pillars of rock with a stray swing, arrows stick in trees, etc. So, I thought about adding some collateral damage rules. Nothing major, here's the...

How do you scare your PCs?

I've found that fear = atmosphere/information. You can go through all the trouble you want to set up the atmosphere, but if the players know exactly what it is they're up against all the fear goes out the window. Sometimes the smallest things can change it entirely. For instance, I took a Mohrg...

Is hardness exactly the same as DR?

Only certain sonic attacks ignore hardness (most notably psionic powers). however, sonic damage is in the same boat as acid damage in that it does full damage to objects, while fire and cold do 1/2 and electricity does 1/4. However, personally I'd say that the light beam would do full damage...

    Dmg II

I saw the mob template in use in the third to last Cauldron adventure, this will probably be similar. Essentially a mob is a Swarm for larger creatures, like when unruly peasants try to lynch a hero or if a stampede of hores tries to run him over. It worked pretty well, I think.

Rambling about the nature of campaigns and magic

I've toyed with making a campaign where arcane magic is nothing but alchemy, ki, and trickery, but it didn't pan out. Not the system, the game itself. And personlally, I wouldn't ditch evocation. It's rather light on save or die and seems to fit my view of a fantasy wizard better than things...

    That's not magic, that's just...a trick! Yeah, that's right...

Well, that's kinda the point, isn't it? ;) Personally, the best explanation I can come up with lets a teensy bit of magic in. By attuning the iron spike to the other person's ki and throwing it at their shadow, you can pin it to the ground (even if light conditions change). It's appropriate...

    That's not magic, that's just...a trick! Yeah, that's right...

Why that answer is simple...uh... *ninja smoke bomb, runs away* Ahem, actually, good point. A fix would be appreciated.

    What is this creature?

It reminds me of the Hobyah in the Standing Stone adventure way back when. They were diminutive monkey-things that sat in the trees and stared at you at night with their baleful, glowing eyes. Get enough of them and they started causing a fear effect. They were also the first creature with...

    That's not magic, that's just...a trick! Yeah, that's right...

So now it's your turn. Think up some good excuses for the spells in the PHB, taking into account their components, method of delivery, duration, etc. All of that should remain the same (though possibly with a different material component). All that should change is the way it is presented.

    That's not magic, that's just...a trick! Yeah, that's right...

In an anime-themed game I'm going to be running over the summer, there will be no magic. However, all the player classes will be available. No, I'm not forcing wizards to play commoners with good will saves. Instead, "magic" will be called "techniques," and come from a mixture of things, such as...

    Egyptians with Medieval Technology

Okay, I don't want to offend anyone, but...WTF are you talking about? ;) You're thinking of the Japanese Tama-hagane steel. It was made from very low-quality iron sand and was loaded with impurities. The folding process reinforced it to minimize the structural impact of the impurities...
