Is a coup de grace an evil act?

Well, yes, the DM did not allow me to follow through with my declared act we did eventually end up capturing my opponent. So yes, the DM said it was evil and thus, lo, it was, is and shall be an evil act. But outside of that, do you think that it is an inherently evil action: like say, using...

Is a coup de grace an evil act?

Here's the situation: My party (all good-aligned) sees a wounded traveler on the roadside. He tells us that he was beset by bandits. A short time later, we encounter the same said bandits. The bandits get the drop on us and basically tell us to "stand and deliver" i.e. surrender and give up...

    talking during combat

In an ideal gaming universe, with mature non-metagaming players, I would LOVE to adopt Infiniti2000's more liberal role-playing-focused talking-during-combat rules (or more specifically, lack of rules). Unfortunately, my gang of players is a bit more unruly and certain ones in particular will...

    talking during combat

Fighters can move and talk and fight all they want. Provided its all done in six seconds. The rules specify that combat rounds are to be artifically segmented into 6 second chunks. These same rules only allow six seconds of movement, six seconds of combat, etc. per player turn. Why not six...

    talking during combat

My former and now-again-current DM restricted talking in combat to 3 words, which I found a little miserly, but I see that more than one person here has the same rule. When I DM'd my rule was no combat talking out of your character's turn, but that you could say anything you wanted to as long...

    What should I play?

Rogue with a couple or levels of Fighter, or vice-versa is so FUN. Fairly tough with hitpoints. Highly resourceful with lots of skill points and a fair amount of feats. And very damaging with sneak attacks. Of course, if your player group is, shall we say "Tactically Retarded" and always...

Just Curious ... Hom many come from AD&D?

I started gaming with AD&D back in 1980, at age 10. Gamed a bit in high school, more in college, not at all in graduate school (although I continued to build up my gaming library) and now that I am a working stiff (trial attorney) I manage to get in a regular one-night a week gaming session...

What are dwarves like in your campaign?

The dwarves in my campaign are short. ;)

Is there a metamagic feat which decreases a material component cost?

I've always hated having to find 100 gp pearls in order to cast a measly level 1 Identify spell. Grrrrr.

    Blur and Mirror Image

It would seem that if you had both spells up at once, all of your Mirror Images would be Blurred as well. I'd check Blur first. Only if the attack gets thru that will it matter if an image was lost, not the other way around.

David C. Sutherland III passed away (merged)

His art sparked my imagination at a young age and help to bind me to this game, and this hobby, that I still love some 25 years later.

Poll: Would you pay for space to play?

Given the right set-up, sure, I'd play for a nice clean space to play in. Playing at people's homes is all well and good, but one person's definition of "clean and ready for company" can be much much different than another's. I remember back in the day playing AD&D and Warhammer campaigns in...

    New Spells for Lvl1 Wiz

This situation was almost a deal-breaker in my decision to play a wizard. I just took it on faith that my PC will have the needed time in the campaign to devote to the 3 R's of acane casters: reading (spellbooks), 'riting (scrolls) and researching (new spell acquisition). If my PC doesn't...

    New Spells for Lvl1 Wiz

Wow, thanks gang for all the suggestions. I never even considered Grease. Good call. Feel free to keep the hints and tips comin'. As for scroll availibility. I'm not too sure what the DM has in mind just yet. I know we are starting the campaign out in a small town and our first trip will...

    New Spells for Lvl1 Wiz

New campaign starting up soon. I've played D&D since back in the day, but this is my first time to run an arcane caster under the 3.5 (or 3.0 for that matter) rules. Previously I've stuck with sword swingers, divine casters, or trap-springers (or some combo of the 3). For the new campaign I...

Game Calendar. Do you have one?

Although I don't use this calendar for my current campaign (or any calendar for that matter), my longest-running campaign from back in the day had a calendar of 365 days divided up as follows: Twelve Months of 30 days each; Four free-standing 1-day breaks that did not belong to any month and...

    Austin area game

Game technically isn't in Austin proper, but rather in North Travis County, about two minutes away from the I35 corridor. Email the original poster (smaggi) for details.

    Austin area game

Austinites - if you play in ONE campaign this year, make it this one! I have been with smaggi's game group (as both a player and as a GM) for going on 2.5 years and let me say that it rocks. A teriffic mix of great gaming, lots of laughs around the table, and genuinely cool players, without...

Are you sick and tired of quoted movies during your D&D sessions?

"I cast Magic Missile" and "I attack the darkness" each get quoted at least once per game session guaranteed. Which is funny, because in my current campaign, no PC has the ability to actually cast Magic Missile. It just gets said anyway. "Game over, Man" from Aliens is another frequent...
