D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

I will fully admit that I'm one of the five people a bit nostalgic for Vancian casting, at least for the wizard. I think it's not coming back, because it's more time consuming and frustrating for most people, but I think it made for interesting decision points compared to the current version.

Worlds of Design: The Problem with Magimarts

I'm definitely not a fan of unlimited/restriction less magimarts. I've found that if player's can get their hands on anything, it just ends up buying predictable "best" items, which gets kinda old. However, it makes sense magic items would be a commodity, even if a rare one, so I'm not 100% no...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

My group tried some homebrew HP casters back in 3e/3.5 and it never ended well. Either too much of a death spiral, or the cost was so minimal it was incredibly overpowered.

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

It's a balancing act for sure. Too many classes take up too much page space, and most will probably be ignored because they end up catering to specific, very niche concepts. Too few and what's left is very broad, generic classes that need to balance a lot of options. Admittedly I could live...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

So, we actually agree that a character's theme, or narrative story is heavily impacted by those details. Where we disagree is that we need two classes for that I think. For a hypothetical example, let's say we have Jack, who made a deal with with a devil for magical powers, and Jill, who found...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

So, going to devil's advocate for the idea of combining the Warlock and Sorcerer for a minute, since I did post earlier that I thought the idea was interesting. This might be a bit long though. There are two considerations for doing this, the mechanics and the flavor. You can't ignore either...

3.5 sorcerer did not have any armor profs, but did have a few more weapon options.

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

I've been thinking about this a bit since my last post. And I think there is two distinct predecessors to the current sorcerer, the 3e one and the 4e one. They are actually quite different as well. The 3e sorcerer, at it's base, is concerned with the thematic of inborn magical talent, although...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

Hmm, combining the Warlock and Sorcerer is not the worst idea. Make them imbued with magic either by pact or blood, and you might have something there.

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

That's part of the problem. It's basically got none in the first place, beyond some vague power of the mind thing, which frankly sounds like it's just magic. There have been attempts to differentiate between the two. Dark Sun was probably the most successful of those attempts, mostly by making...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

I'm... not a huge fan of psions from a thematic standpoint. Mechanically they have never really clicked well with the various systems either I think. So, I'd rather the sorcerer ate their lunch, from a completely personal standpoint. Metamagic was an interesting choice as the niche for...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

So, maybe controversial, but 3e's sorcerer had way more of a reason for existing IMO, which is precisely that it didn't use the classic Vancian method of the wizard. But that got diluted in 5e, and as such the sorcerer really comes off as Wizard minus a spellbook.

(IC) Against the Giants PBP Group 1

Valda watched the eagle riders flying in the distance while trying to keep an ear to any discussion from the group, and possibly any other dangers in hills. She was sure that the others were far more capable thinkers than her and would be better suited to come up with the details of a plan. As...

Valda had been bruised and battered over the last day, but she was used to the feeling, from both her time living on the streets and her time as an adventurer, and besides, she felt a sense of satisfaction. Giants had always been in the back of her mind since the day they had destroyed her...

The strange insectoid monster's gazes were hypnotic, causing Valda to feel like she was on the edge of dreaming. She tried to resist but everything became hazy as she started to stumble around unconsciously. Like Jack, making two saving throws. Charisma Saving Throws: 1D20+1 = [20]+1 = 21...
