    Whither Gencon?

I am not going to Gencon this year. It is the first time in (can it be?) 15 years that I am missing it for any reason other than illness. I've got ample funds this year, though in the past I've been unemployed and poor and still found a way to make it. It's always been an immutable part of my...

    Arcana unearthed Vs. Unearthed Arcana

I'd call that a testament to the power of hype. I was one of the many buying, at list price with few middlemen, AU at GenCon last year. I didn't read it through carefully enough, mostly because I trusted the stellar recommendations I had heard on this board and elsewhere. (And because my time...

    Arcana unearthed Vs. Unearthed Arcana

Bought AU pretty much because of the raves from rabid Monte fans. Have since learned to disregard raves from rabid Monte fans. Though the book has some good ideas, unless you are using it to start a new, totally different campaign (ideally based in Monte's Diamond Throne world), it is not...

    Detect Magic and Traps

I like the idea of a hide-y metamagic feat. Detect Magic, and it's bigger brother, Arcane Sight, are a big pain in the neck. It is very difficult to spring any surprises on the party once Permanency is available. Please note that Nystul only works on objects, and only relatively small ones at...

    Magical Auras

I think Undetectable Aura is only for magic items. I don't know of one that masks spells short of misdirection (2nd level). And I use the Jafar example to make an extreme point. Bottom line is that if magic is not extraordinarily common, very low level characters can easily foil magical...

    Magical Auras

Yeah, kinda wish there was a Magic Aura/Undetectable Aura that affected spells (lower level than Nondetection, and as long lasting as the spell it is masking). Sounds like metamagic feat in the making... Here is a similar case. The Succubus. If you are not running a distinctly high magic...

    Magical Auras

(or, how a 1st level mage can remove intrigue from a game). Has anyone found any good clarification on what spells have magical auras? I believe the default answer is "all", or at least all that have lingering effects. But now let's go into the concept of using enchantments in an intrigue...

How much can you tell about a readied action?

Can an observer tell if an archer has readied an action to "shoot the caster if he tries to cast a spell"? How about if a bard readies a silence spell for the same condition? Can one tell if he is readying a spell? Can one spellcraft it to try to determine what is being readied? How about...

Feat Prereq's & Ability Score mods

Can anyone find me a rule that states that an ability score prereq for a feat has to be the character's natural ability score? The argument is with a player over the leadership feat. When he recruits a cohort, does he use his natural charisma bonus or may he use an enhancement bonus to...

How many mini sets do you need to make them a useful part of your game?

Mmm. I disagree. You can say it enough. ;) Some of the Harbinger paint jobs were not so good, but probably about as good as I could do myself with a lot more effort. I really like the Archfiends paint jobs so far. Not works of art, certainly, but those Chinese factory workers are doing...

Need something nasty to do to a scryer

That is actually kind of the point of the post. Ideas for consequences. "You scry on the Lich? Well, then you're dead." is not really my style. Or maybe I should just teleport a couple of Pit Fiends in on him while he is sitting on the crapper? Doesn't make for a good game, in my experience.

Need something nasty to do to a scryer

Well, I have given them a one year interlude between phases of the campaign, during which their enemies are regrouping and preparing their revenges. The Bard is spending eight hours a day for a year trying to scry on everyone who hates him, including liches, uber-thieves, Great Hunters...

How many mini sets do you need to make them a useful part of your game?

Slightly better than average. I believe 48/60 is the probable result, missing 3 uncommons and 9 rares.

How many mini sets do you need to make them a useful part of your game?

A result that a simple probability exercise would have predicted... Spreadsheet for Dragoneye/Archfiends attached. Point of rapidly diminishing returns reached around 8-12 packs (8 if having lots of commons is not your thing, 12 if the commons are cool in large groups). Buy singles after that.

Need something nasty to do to a scryer

Only if the scryer cares about his privacy. Which in my case, he doesn't.

Need something nasty to do to a scryer

What is to keep someone with enough time on their hands from just trying to scry over and over again until the target misses their will save and they win the caster level check vs. the Amulet of Proof against Detection and Location? Specifically, what can the target of a scry do offensively to...

    WotC Miniatures Storage?

I went the the local craft store and got a case intended for holding and compartmentalizing beads. I have about 160 minis in this case, roughly organized using my patented "free-association" cataloguing system. The only ones that don't really fit are the ones with large wingspans. I like it.

    Some Great Lakes visuals needed

Heya, Not having been to the Great Lakes region much...except driving to Milwaukee for GenCon a few times, I am at a loss on how to visualize the next part of my campaign. The very short version is that it is in the future, several millennia from now, and that things have transpired to explain...

    A probability exercise for Archfiends

Nightfaaaaaal!!!! (screamed "Wrath of Khan" style) OK, I got impatient and employed my "Use Excel" skill. Results attached.

    A probability exercise for Archfiends

So Archfiends is coming out. I have fallen for the collectability hook, and let us say for the sake of argument that I want to "collect 'em all". (Actually, I just want to collect the ones I want, which is most, but not all). I want to buy the ideal number of expansion packs, then fill in the...
