D&D 4E House Rules for Old School 4e

A large part of our last gaming session involved airing out what bugged us about 4e after playing it for 18 months. One of the comments was that there are no 'quick' combats anymore. I mentioned to the player that while I agreed with him on that, the reason is that earlier editions involved...

What are your problems with Healing/Dying mechanics in 4E

We had a big discussion about 4e at our last session on Friday and one of the discussions was about the healing/dying mechanic. We all agreed that there wasn't enough 'threat' of dying (although I as the DM have gotten a lot better at dropping the PCs below zero hp). We brought up some of the...

What are your problems with Healing/Dying mechanics in 4E

I've never even had my PC's bother with Endurance checks. It's been immediately...Cure Disease! And once you get past about 14th level or so, RAW it's practially impossible to have any substantive failure on the roll.

Disappointed in Dungeon, at least for adventures.

Yeah, as I said in the OP it was bi-monthly...but many of those adventures were excellent.

Disappointed in Dungeon, at least for adventures.

I was going through a bunch of 15 year old Dungeon magazines and I realized how much the current version pales, at least as far as variety of adventures go. Yes, we have some more content, but it's stuff that was originally in Dragon. Chaos Scar looks good, but so far they've only had a ton of...

What are your problems with Healing/Dying mechanics in 4E

My problem is that it's too hard to die! I've never had a PC die due to failing 3 death saves. At higher levels it's very tough to get to -ve bloodied, because of the rule that any healing when below 0 raises you to 0, then adds the healing.

Thats a good point about grabs and immediates.

House Rule - Changing Dazed and Stunned

One of the problems with higher level play is the prevalence of powers and monster abilities that result in Dazed or Stunned conditions. PC's hate it. DM's hate it. They're annoying and result in combats getting longer. Critical Hits mentioned this in their blog entry today: Critical Hits »...

House Rule - No Aid Other in Rituals

One of my peeves in higher level rituals is that it becomes trivial for aid another to work (since the DC is a static 10). This makes higher level Diseases of Afflictions trivial to remove. One solution I see is to just eliminate the Aid Another option from Rituals. Another solution is to...

    The Next Innovation in Gaming

I agree, but if there was one place I can see getting much bigger, at least for D&D is the shift towards an electronic/tech platform. We're starting to see this in the Compendium, the Character Builder and Monster Builder. We're starting to see apps for laptops (which are getting smaller...

That's what I was thinking. Bear Spirit = Earth Element. :-)

re: rich baker's dark sun chat on 12/14

Divine power source...gone. Preserving arcane spells is default, but arcane casters get an at will power that allows them to defile with Daily powers which hurts your allies in addition to killing plants. Thrikreen are PC race, have four arms but two of them are 'weak'. Dark Sun specific...

    Debut: Ardent

I don't think I like the idea of the Mantle of Clarity giving a bonus to defenses against Opp Attacks equal to the Cha modifier. That seems a bit overwhelming at Epic levels...basically making the PC's nearly immune to Opportunity Attacks.

    Eberron Epic Tier

I wish there was more help on running Epic Tier campaigns, but I suppose that's DMG3 material. Still, our group is about to get into the Epic Tier and I'm trying to come up with a good arc. The PC's, through their actions, have eliminated the possibility for Tiamat to be released, and that...

    Skather, Dragonborn Ninja

My players are VERY VERY good at coordinating and controlling. Especially considering that they've got one controller (an Invoker) and two other classes with controlly powers as a secondary role.

New Dark Sun Info - Free Tyr and the Mountains of Athas

What I want to know is how they're going to be making combat more 'brutal'.

The Magic Items that WotC cannot publish

Whoops! Browser Settings Incompatible I disagree with him. I'd certainly buy a 'cool Magic Item' book. It could be a book on 'Lesser Artifacts'. The items wouldn't be full on Artifacts, but still could be controlled by the DM. At the very least, it's worthy of a DDI article.

    Skather, Dragonborn Ninja

Skather originally shows up in Red Hand of Doom, and he annoyed the crap out of my players. So I brought him back for the big campaign that just ended, becoming a recurring villain. Great fun. :D He finally bit it in the big campaign finale on Friday, but in another forum I had a request...
