D&D General Ed Greenwood: How The Realms Began

It would be fascinating to see what Ed's original vision for the Realms looked like. I suspect it would be a lot more consistent than the world we see today. I have run FR campaigns many times over the years and love the depth and warmth of the setting, but I find the need to pander to the...

    Prepainted minis

Legendary Evils is pretty good, which is very welcome after the somewhat dodgy paint jobs on some of the recent sets. I bought a case, which I've never done before, and was very pleased to get only one double (apart from the commons of course). I know you get fewer figures now, but I still...

Any Gamers In Brighton (Sussex, England)? A New Game Shop Is Opening

D&D Worldwide Game Day Been down there again today - my kids did an introductory painting lesson (for free!!!). I'm trying to persuade the owner to run D&D worldwide game day on September 19. I've been in touch with Charles Ryan and he says it's not too late. If you're in the shop over the...

Is the time right for electronic dice?

Froth, froth, grrr...electronic dice? Whatever next? Any player getting out his 'eye-pod' or other new-fangled device will get short shrift from me. One of my players attempted to use some kind of electronic bleepy d6 once. Outrageous. Everyone knows that dice are the gaming gods' gift to...

Did Anyone play the new WHFRPG?

For myself, I'm wondering why call this WFRP 3rd edition? Warhammer 2nd edition is a really good game, and not that old. From a marketing point of view I don't understand why they're not keeping 'proper' WFRP going and making this an entirely new game. Because it looks fun, I have to say - I'm...

Any Gamers In Brighton (Sussex, England)? A New Game Shop Is Opening

This is great. I'll certainly head down there on opening day. I went to Brighton today and all we've got is Dave's Book shop which is rather pants for RPGs.

Except I'm much prettier than he is.

    Favourite Mortality Rate by Edition

Did you fudge a lot of die rolls?

I think published adventures require MORE prep, not less.

Have you actually run it? This is way off being my experience. I hardly had to do any prep at all when running Keep on the Shadowfell.

Do you use a DM screen?

I've changed over the years. I used to have a large screen covering everything. Then I stopped having a screen entirely because I felt cut off, but my players complained they could see stuff they didn't want to see. So now, I have found an excellent compromise - I use an old portrait-style DM...

An Opportunity for WotC in 2009

I think I'd have to distinguish between 2e and 2e settings. To me, 2e was completely unplayable. I had so many house rules I actually had an entirely different game system. On the other hand, many 2e settings were great. Planescape was at times utterly inspired, Birthright was one of my faves...

    D-Total: a single die for d3,d4,d6,d8,d12,d24

Just to say I felt honoured to be DMing when you first rolled this at GenCon UK!!!

D&D 4e Living FR Thursday Mid Sussex

I'm looking for 1-3 players for Living Forgotten Realms 4th edition D&D in Mid-Sussex (Haywards Heath), UK to join 3 existing players. We'll be playing on Thursday nights - not every Thursday nights, but most of them!

Experiences with the updated Skill Challenge?

Also, you can get rid of the table if you wish. Easy DCs: 10 + level/2 Moderate DCs: 15 + level/2 Hard DCs: 20 + level/2 This is my house rule from now on. Simple.

Experiences with the updated Skill Challenge?

Interestingly, I've just come back from GenCon UK and DMed three different Living FR scenarios for a total of six sessions. Every single skill challenge was a success - and they all use DCs of around 15 for moderate challenges at first level. I'd say that the errata'd DCs (10 for moderate at...

Sandboxing in the Nentir Vale (was: Emergent Features in KotS)

Do bear in mind that the p42 table has been errata'd and is now completely different!!!

Finally got the 4e core books

That's pretty inflammatory. 3e was a "chore" and "work" for me. I have 30 years DMing experience and countless hours. You can't argue I'm not experienced. You can argue I'm not a good DM, though I'd rather you did that after playing in one of my games.

    DDI for $7.95

I've been one of the biggest 4e fanboys out there so far, but even I'm starting to get cheesed off by this. "Our current plan is to start charging for subscriptions before we have the client applications ready." Does this suggest to anyone else that the client applications are even further...
