D&D (2024) 2024 D&D: now available for the rest of us

Yes. Please explain to me how two compatible versions, both of the "fifth edition," consistently earn a "not recommended" rating when it comes to mixing character rules. And how these compatible, same-edition games have two different rule sets. One would think they follow the same rules, and that mixing them would at least be "permissible."

This is not recommended.
Ask on a Fantasy Grounds forum, as they are the ones making that decision, not WotC. Again, you can't place the blame on WotC for a decision another company altogether is making.

Telling you that something is "Not Recommended" just means that they feel that you will have a better experience if you do it how they recommend. It's not "rules and permissions".

You can do what you like. It's really not worth getting angry about.

and this is the lie we have been sold.

sure, you can play a 2014 monk next to 2024, and because of bounded accuracy, attacks and AC will match(mostly), but this is where it all stops, as you would be insane to play 2014 monk next to 2024 for example.
That's not a lie. Backwards compatibility has nothing to do with making the older stuff look nicer.

Take the PS2 the original version could play PS1 games as well cause they were backwards compatible. The PS1 games did not look any nicer just cause they were being played on a new system.

I'm actually very surprised that Roll20 allows me to mix and match 2014 and 2024. This was something I complained about a couple years ago: how moving online would prevent me from mixing and matching the way I did with, say, AD&D and B/X. I was wrong! (Incidentally, 2024 is a lot more "compatible" with 2014 than B/X and AD&D were, so I'm literally laughing out loud at some of the "LIES!!!" commentary.)

I would like to see 2014 and 2024 fighter in the same party and having same effect in combat.
It is possible, at least on FantasyGrounds, if you really want to. Use at your own risk, there is some potential for synergies that may not be acceptable at some table.

Edit: to be honest, I think you could make a mash up on D&DBeyond, though you may have to do some faffing about with the customisation tools.

If you want an "out of the box" experience on FG , you're likely working with 2014 or 2024. If you want cross-compatibility, you're likely going to have to program that yourself. I added the Next Playtest for the Fighter to my FG 2014 campaign just fine. The 5e engine on FG was fairly easy to automate and add in alt classes, etc. But you have to figure it out. Its just the way it is.

Not really, I have just been mucking about in the character builder. Now I have not been trying to make hybrid characters, but I have mixed and matched legacy backgrounds with 2024 classes, species and the like and all the legacy stuff is there and can be dragged to the character sheet.
I do not really see that there would be much of an issue with mixing and matching from the point of view of the VTT application. The gameplay experience is another matter.

I just wish it worked better!

But I assume they will make full support for 2014 and the ability to mix the two a selling point.

You can do it is different from you should do it.

You can use 2014 rules with the 2024 rules.

You can also use MichaelSomething's Shock Collar HP (or MSSCHP)rules with the 2024 rules.

MSSCHP= everyone wears shock collars that shock them whenever they take HP damage. The sure way to turn players away from the super hero feeling yo yo healing of 5E!
