D&D (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #1: "Everything You Need To Know!"

Each day this week, Wizards of the Coast will be releasing a new live-streamed preview video based on the upcoming Player's Handbook. The first is entitled Everything You Need To Know and you can watch it live below (or, if you missed it, you should be able to watch it from the start afterwards). The video focuses on weapon mastery and character origins.

There will be new videos on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week, focusing on the Fighter, the Paladin, and the Barbarian, with (presumably) more in the coming weeks.

I'm just so glad that D&D is getting the M:TG art treatment. I was so tired of 5E's art direction for most of its life span. This is so much better, the art is so much higher quality, so much more interesting, so many new ideas in it. I never thought I'd see the day tbh. I'm just so happy that the art is good. If you liked it before, good for you.
I have always liked 5E art, but yes, tge upgrade is nice.

Agreed. IMO, new players and casual players cannot handle custom backgrounds. Leave that to veteran or hardcore players.
At tge same time, it is easy to balance as we know from the UA version, so a good starting point to train DMs how to change the game for their tables.

So it serves to help new players focus on a concept that works nareativeky and mechanically, and new DMs get a handle on how to run a game. And veterans shouldn't find it much if a speed bump.

Good luck convincing the 5e community to embrace player-authored content. You'll have an easier time convincing lions to become vegetarian.

Good Lord, I didn't even get the chance to finish writing the post before the evidence presented itself!

Don't despair too much for the community. I've been using the custom background extensively (mostly with one-off characters) and here are a few examples of backgrounds I've made that were approved: "Pious Thief", "Orphan Acolyte", "Former Infernal Legionnaire ", "Tribe Member", "Reborn Horror", and "Knight-Captain of Karthian Empire"

So, at least some of the community is up to the fun of free-form backgrounds.

Of course, that is what I always knew it would be. But it's nice that folks are finally agreeing that 5.5e does, in fact, replace 5e in exactly the way 3.5e replaced 3e. Something numerous people on this very board repeatedly insisted was not true.
I was attacked for saying that by the time the 3 books were out we would have those books only and then slowly they would 'update' other subclasses and you would need house rules to make others work
