Because I convince them.
Persuation check and clear visible casting.
"Persuation check"
As average, The Bastion wins.
Point of Order!

Persuasion check takes your Action, as per DMG. If the Nightmare acts before the Bastion, it can act before being influenced by the Bastion’s Persuasion attempt. Otherwise, the Bastion just used his Action to maintains control over his mount.

Proceed.

I call an Nightmare's Insight vs Bastion's Persuation on his turn.

I don't allow Wish abuse. I am cruel, but fair. Mostly cruel, though.

Question: do you allow passive knowledge of a wizard to know beforehand if a Wish was within the bound of the reasonable? A spellcaster 20 could have some guidelines on what is accetpable outside the replicating of an 8th level spell? Or do you prefer Wish to be used to replicate 8th level and lower as the upper bound?

Note that with ability checks, you, as a player, do not get to say, "I make a Persuasion check." You tell me what you are doing before I decide whether there is a check at all, and whether advantage or disadvantage apply. Depending on what you do, you might succeed or fail without even rolling.

WRONG: "I roll Persuasion against the bugbear guard"
RIGHT: "I tell the bugbear guard I will give him this half-eaten goose carcass if he lets me pass."

Furthermore, all such checks take an action.

The rule is, "if you feel like you are being a total munchkin, you probably are."
Guidelines: if the effect is on the order of something in the spell book in terms of potency, you're okay. Binding Yeenoghu to your service, wishing for Tiamat to be dead, wishing for the Throne of Bone and Blood to be yours, etc, probably a bad idea.

Basically don't be a clown, and you don't get the Monkey's Paw.

As his contingency is triggered by hearing the word spoken, the second yuan-ti dimension door 240 ft away from the Wizard, but still at the farthest point from the second nighmare and cast distant Crown of Madness at the rider.
