[3.5] Damage Reduction & Andy Collins

I have not heard a single person complain about the blood war other than you.

Seeing how it was just, what, yesterday that Andy confirmed how DR will work with respect to creatures hitting their own DR type this is significant how?

It will come. Others are just not paying as much attention to this issue as I have.

On other issues WRT the DR, I am far from the only one.

And WotC seems to think it is not a problem.

Would this be the same WotC who thought that rangers wouldn't be a problem? And who still is imposing lame monk and paladin class restrictions despite a massive sentiment against it.

WotC does not always make the best calls, beleive it or not.

I have played with many different groups over the years.

And I haven't?

So all the evidence from my perspective indicates that I am correct.

Gee, same here.

Actually, he thinks it is cool AND he knew it would irk you.

These are the real two reasons he did it.

If you just want to be snarky because I disagree with you, I see little reason to carry on this conversation.

You have been asked several times how this changes the canon. You seem to not be answering.

If you don't see how changes in DR affect the carnage of warfare, then I am beyond the ability to make you understand.

I see NO bona fide improvement involved in the alignment aspect.

What it comes down to is both in the blood war and in general in battles in the Abyss, fiends were able to contend with one another effectively. All fiends could hit at fiends with their own DR levels with no reduction in damage.

I think I've mentioned it before, but fiends (amongst other things) seem to have gotten a damage boost; if so, perhaps the damage boost, combined with generally lower DRs, is enough for fiends to still be able to rip each other to shreds. Someone who has seen the MM (all you NDA guys, we're looking at you, and Andy Collins too) would be the only folks who could tell us at this point whether that's generally true for all or most fiends, or only true for the devils that have been sneak peeked.

Other than that, how could it be done differently? Just change their DR to x/good or lawful/chaotic (for demons/devils), so that their opposite numbers could pierce their DR? That leaves neutral evil fiends out in the cold a bit; OTOH, they also would have just DR x/good, so while their offense would be hampered, they'd also have a defensive bonus, and could still use lawful/chaotic weapons as needed.

Or we could retain DR x/+y, but I was never the biggest fan of that; having some critters that need really powerful magic weapons to bypass DR is fine, but I don't like the whole scale -- I think magic, then epic works fine (though I might count +5 weapons as "epic", or just say that some [probably artifact] weapons count as "epic", even if they aren't technically).

Giving fiends just DR x/magic would seem to underpower them, since any 1st level spellcaster with magic weapon/fang/stone could bypass their DR.

Are there any other alternatives?

This thread has had many good points. Unfortunately, it has also had a rising share of vitriol. I think we need to close this topic down for a few days and let calm prevail a while.
