[3.5] Paladin's Outer Plane Bank

First Post
So what do you guys think of the new Paladin Mount being called in ?

My entire group remembered the Ultima Online Insta Bank Chest immediately. One even said he would call his mount "Bank" like in the game. I guess most people thought about the convenience of using the Paladins mount as an outer planar Bank safe.

Got too much treasure to haul off ? Load the poor Paladin's Mount till he cant walk anymore and then send him back to whatever plane he stays in !!! :) Recall him only when your in that expensive magic shop in the big city. Safe money.

Imprisoned ? No Problem... just recall the Mount with all your extra equipment in. Rogues certainly should stash (stealthy of course) an extra set of lockpicks in the Mounts saddlebags !

Anyone else have silly ideas on how to use the Paladin's dissapearing Companion ?

The baddies, foiled over an over by the Paladin and his allies, decided to go hunting.

Somewhere in the Outer Planes they find his mount. Slap a Dimensional Anchor on it and kidnap it. (And take all the gear on its back)

Next time the paladin tries to summon his mighty steed "Fluffy"...nothing happens.

Wow. I was going to say You can't do that, but actually, you can:
Each time the mount is called, it appears in full health, regardless of any damage it may have taken previously. The mount also appears wearing or carrying any gear it had when it was last dismissed.
That's quite... cheesy. As a DM, I would certainly frown on my players doing this, even though it's rules legal.

Well I suppose it takes Brazilians to figure out that trick ? :) Just about every player here thought about loading up the Paladins Mount to carry extra treasure.

The total amount you can load on a heavy warhorse can be quite absurd... even if they can move no more than 5 feet.

Thats why you give the mount a personality to match the pride of a paladin. Carrying the paladin and the paladin's stuff is pushing it. Other peoples stuff, no way.

Aaron.

What jester47 said. Here's another section I should've quoted about the mount:
Upon reaching 5th level, a paladin gains the service of an unusually intelligent, strong, and loyal steed to serve her in her crusade against evil (see below).
I think using your loyal steed as Nodwick the gear-carrier is pushing the definition of crusading against evil.

= = = = =

May as well give the full quote for people to reference:

Special Mount (Sp): Upon reaching 5th level, a paladin gains the service of an unusually intelligent, strong, and loyal steed to serve her in her crusade against evil (see below). This mount is usually a heavy warhorse (for a Medium paladin) or a warpony (for a Small paladin).

Once per day, as a full-round action, a paladin may magically call her mount from the celestial realms in which it resides. The mount immediately appears adjacent to the paladin and remains for 2 hours per paladin level; it may be dismissed at any time as a free action. The mount is the same creature each time it is summoned, though the paladin may release a particular mount from service.

Each time the mount is called, it appears in full health, regardless of any damage it may have taken previously. The mount also appears wearing or carrying any gear it had when it was last dismissed. Calling a mount is a conjuration (calling) effect. Should the paladin’s mount die, it immediately disappears, leaving behind any equipment it was carrying. The paladin may not summon another mount for thirty days or until she gains a paladin level, whichever comes first, even if the mount is somehow returned from the dead. During this thirty-day period, the paladin takes a –1 penalty on attack and weapon damage rolls.

Edit: linebreaks.

Use a bag of holding, handy haversack, portable hole, or whatever (depending on your loot-storing needs) to hold the stuff, and put that containter on the mount.

If the paladin is involved, it's in the name of Good, and what righteous and true creature of Good would quibble about a few extra pounds of gear?

The other thing it's good for is hiding stuff -- when the mount is off on another (unnamed, mind you) plane, the stuff it's carrying is proof against many forms of magical location. Toss a mind blank on the mount, if you can & absolutely need to, and you've got a very secure hideaway mechanism. One that can hide, run away, and/or fight back, even.

Sure let the players do this to he poor paladins mount. I mean if the paladin allows the party to store loot on the horse just for the purpose of carrying it around as a free bag of holding maybe the paladin doesn't deserve to be paladin. Maybe his god will stop him from summoning his mount for a short time, when it appears it has nothing on him to teach the paladin a lesson.

Also I have a friend that won't let us drink a Pepsi in his car or even eat anything in it. If he were a paladin I don't think he would let the grubby little thief near his horsey.

Actually, I consider that a rather clever use of a Paladin Mount's ability. But I'd only allow it if they're using it to hide something from the Forces of Evil, as opposed to a generic treasure hiding place...
