40 year old man wants to join my game

This is where we give the opposite advice as we gave in the other thread, right? In that case, have sex with him immediately.

When I was just out of college, our group of 19-21 year olds had one player who was 30. We thought he was ancient.

In retrospect, that's pretty funny. But it was a minor concern at the time.

I'm 38, and we have a 5 year old in the game (the DM's daughter).

The 5 year old is a weirdo...I mean, she is playing D&D at age 5!

I'm 31, but I've also been in this experience. Actually, my situation was even more interesting. You see, I found the name of one of my professors in grad school on a RPG site (not really sure about his age. I think he was 40). So, I stopped by his office and said hey, I noticed that you play D&D. It just so happened that I DM some games.

Well, I wound up in his game and he wound up in mine. In fact he stuck around for a full campaign. It was definitely worth the experience. Sure his playstyle was different from the other players at the table (though I don't think that was a factor of his age as much as his experience at RPGs), but that really made for some good group dynamics. Plus, he was pretty good at keeping the party on track in general. (Especially since one of the other players tended to like fire. Lots and lots of fire.)

What makes me kinda go "wtf?" though is that this guy seems to be completely comfortable gaming with a group of strangers much younger then he...
Are you serious?

I'm in my 50's, I started with OD&D in 1974, and have played with hundreds (if not thousands) of people of all ages, sexes, shapes and forms. How can you casually dismiss a gamer just by his age?

I don't get why people are so hung up about age differences these days.

Oldtimer, I friggin' love your avatar!

BTW, I'm glad it's not just me that thought the OP was knocking older gamers and not just a gamer that he thought was "wierd". I still want an explanation about the whole "desperate" comment.

I was thinking the same thing. Get out of my head! And pay no attention to those other thoughts. :uhoh:

But it's comfy in here!

Seriously, it's good to know I'm not the only person seeing the dark humor in all the complete 180s. :p

Peace & Luv, Liz

Edit: Wait, make that three people:

When I was your age, Nyaricus, I would have preferred playing with people older than me - because they wouldn't do all the stupid juvenile things that people my age usually did. ;)

Before you think it's weird for a 40-year-old to be willing to play with teens, remember that mentions of school in your ad don't automatically imply youth. And people responding to your ad may be like people looking for a job: they'll try any possibility whether they have the right qualifications or not.

If you're really uncomfortable playing with someone old enough to be your parental unit then your ad should specify that you're looking for younger players. But give the older crowd a chance. You might be pleasantly surprised by what a more seasoned player can bring to your gaming experience.
