Two issues..
1. Chess is VERY old, and had its own evolution to the form we know today. (It evolved out of much older Indian games, and moved on from there.) if we were on a D&D edition in about 1000 years from now... then maybe we can compare...

2. To be similar to chess, we'd also have to basically be happy with the core books... and then nothing else. Chess sells chess sets. It doesn't have to worry about splat books or supporting game designers.
