[4e] Campaign discussion thread (Full)

Okay, thanks for all the work folks, we're going to be starting soon (after the Thanksgiving holiday).

Eoghan, garyh and Steve Gorak are sidelined by RL (or waning interest). I'd like to wait for them to join us formally, since they've already helped shape the campaign in pretty significant ways, but in interests of momentum we're going to move ahead with the five complete PCs.

These are:

Belleros, Eladrin Swordmage [Atanatotatos]
Krik, Dragonborn Ranger [nerdytenor]
Heskrash, Dragonborn Paladin [Redclaw]
Mask, Doppelganger Wizard [Shayuri]
Zlatan, Dwarven Cleric [Tallarn]

I will construct the opening scenes over the holidays and we'll begin next week (I haven't picked a day to 'launch' yet).

Some items of business to get out of the way:

  1. Color will be used to denote the language spoken, not the character speaking. I'll post a language key soon. A note on language: Dwarven is everyone's 'for free' language instead of Common. Treat Common like any other language.
  2. Rolls will be on Invisible Castle. Campaign name, Toranthar. If you're not familiar wth Invisible Castle, PM me and I'll square you away. Rolls should appear in the OOC portion of an IC post (like normal).
  3. The OOC portion of an IC post should pertain directly to the narrative, actions, rolls, light tactics, and questions to me regarding these elements. The OOC thread is for longer discussions on tactics, suggestions for running combat, asides to other players.
  4. OOC portions of the IC thread will not be in spoilers/sblocks and should be Font Size 1 and dimgray (second row, last column).
OOC: Like so.

NOTE: Do not use spoilers/sblocks in the IC thread for OOC content, I don't like mining them to find important information - rolls, actions, questions, etc. Additionally, I find them aesthetically unappealing to the visual flow of an IC thread in all but a few cases (like an envelope that must be opened) where their "interactivity" is an enhancement.

There's probably more. I'll get the language color key up soon. It is designed with EN World's default colorscheme in mind. Let me know if that's a problem.

OOC stuff like this. Got it.

Just to let you know, this is the first time I've played in such a "properly managed" pbp game, so apologies in advance if anything goes wrong. :)

Is there any particular way you want us to designate ourselves on the page? And what about using "QUOTE" in the IC thread to help everyone understand who we're replying to,
is that OK?

I do like the idea of using different colors to represent different languages - it should add a bit to IC play, certainly. If I get Dwarven for free - hmmm... I think Zlatan doesn't speak Common at the moment. After all, in a city dominated by Dwarves and cut off from outside contact for hundreds of years, why would he? But I'll leave his "other" language spot free for now, assuming that I can "pick up" common later on should it become important.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! D&D is a very special hobby to me and I'm glad to be able to share it with new people all the time. Thanks to you all for taking part in Toranthar. Thanks to EN World for a place to meet. And thanks to everyone who's kept D&D vital over the years, from Gary decades ago to all the good folks at WotC today. I'm thankful!

* Tallarn - welcome to 'properly managed' pbp! I hope it feels 'properly managed' rather than 'needlessly draconic.' I'm constantly trying to refine how a game is presented, stealing from other DMs and ditching what didn't work in the last game to try something that does. You got the raw end of one of those unrefined elements that I'd had success with in a previous game with the whole no-repeated-letters-name thing... sorry about that and thanks for working with me.

* I'm not sure what you mean by designating yourself on the page? Bolding your name? I've seen that used effectively. It seems most effective when you bold the name of every PC and NPC so it can be a trifle burdensome in a long or inclusive post. That what you meant?

* Quotes and using the Quote function for responses - If you do use them, edit the quoted post down to just the piece you need for context. Just to keep the IC thread tidy.

* Tracking combat stats in the IC thread - There will be no need for you to track combat stats in the IC thread, in every combat post I make I will put links to two shared Google Docs, one with combat stats (HP, AC, conditions and the like) and one of the map.

* I didn't explicity state it, but I encourage 'table talk' in the OOC thread. More vigorous tactical discussions, plans, you know, table talk. A good portion of it can come out in the IC thread and I encourage this as well, but it can be difficult to wrap realistic speech around mechanical rules (though I'm in a game with nerdytenor where he does a very good job at that).

EDIT: Forgot, picking a language later is just fine.

Start date is next week, I'm writing the opening posts this weekend and the game will start when I've finished with those.

Sparky...I've been chewing on Mask's background some, and I realized perhaps I can tie her into our eladrin, with that player's permission.

[sblock]What if Thorn, after all this shook out, retreated into the Feywild, perhaps with a small group of followers trying to escape from the doppelganger 'purge' on the material plane. This would help me explain the Pact Initiate (Fey) feat I want to take, as well as explain both where she's been all this time, and how she gets back.[/sblock]
