D&D 4E 4e Srd

I just wanted to get my $.02 in.

Personally, I hope they either wait a while before releasing the 4E SRD or release initially to the 3rd party developers with an NDA so that it isn't releasable to the public then open it up later.

I have nothing against the SRD, but I want to see D&D survive as a brand and I see way too many people saying how they won't buy the books but instead get the rules for free with the SRD. If people aren't buying the books then WotC isn't making enough off of D&D and the brand is threatened.

I'm not going to buy every book WotC puts out, but I feel that if you want to play the game, you should at least buy the darn PHB. The SRD is a referance, not a game for free.

I'm sure some dissagre, but it's how I feel about it.

There were certain parts of the 3.5 PHB that weren't in the SRD, some of which were integral to play, at least until you memorized them. I doubt this edition will be any different.

And being able to evaluate the rules via the SRD will undoubtedly encourage some people to pony up for the books. I'm still tempted by 3e Unearthed Arcana just because of the bits I've seen in the SRD...

I'm one of those "SRD only" players (DM usually).

My players buy handbooks anyways, even after I show them the hypertext srd. They just like having them.

I think WOTC will be ok. I won't object loudly if there's a delay between the PHB and the SRD, but I don't think they need to in order to turn a healthy profit.

Well, I'm sure the SRD will be coming out in the next couple months for the 3rd party publishers. I think that this version of the OGL will be more restrictive and may limit who can and cannot publish compatible stuff, in some way.

As for me as a potential player, I don't think I'll need to read the SRD to decide if I will buy it or not.

The people who will use the SRD rather than buy the books are probably not the kind of people who will run out and purchase the books in the first couple of months, just to have the rules right away if they delay the SRD. They will likely be willing to wait to start playing a 4e game until after the SRD comes out. Might as well release it right away and build goodwill than hold it back and be accused yet again of making a money grab.

I'm one of those. I never would have gotten back into D&D at all if it wasn't for the "test drive" I was able to take with the SRD.

I think it increases sales rather than limiting them. YMMV.

I'd buy one now that they are discounted...
