4E - The High Road (OOC)

Newton was wrong. All matter in the World is pulled downward, towards the maw. "Gravity" is the maws power pulling on all that exists. Even the world that was, solid ground was supported through mystical energies which still tenously pull the upwards, though much of the world fell into the maw.

Thats just amazing.

What is missing is the evil empire. The characters seem to cry out for a dominant society or group that controls much of the world. A few possibilities....

Jeroth - a caste based culture that does not allow people to rise above the place they were born into. At the top of the social pyramid are the Priests, the Scholars and the Warriors. They go bu the unwritten rules of behavior far more than any codified laws.

ZaZen - a massive bureaucracy run by documents and official permissions. The heart of the bureaucracy is dominated by elderin. Who are obviously more intelligent and better educated than most humans, and all lesser races. The combined forces of Elderin and Humans strive to keep all other 'savage' races under control.

Teleporting is called "Walking the Maw" and enough of it will erode the magic that holds the earthmotes aloft. Short distance transport is ignored, but permanent circles are mostly forbidden or restricted to expendable pieces of land at the edge of earth motes.

Red and Blue - Two rival demigods control the largest two earthmotes. one favors the raw elemental forces, the other bends the energy called radiance. Any direct battle would destroy both of them, so smaller fights by proxies and wars of influence are far more common, it is said that they were once mortal and brothers, companions or lovers but none now living know the truth. (this rivalry could be expanded to as many as six warring demi-gods.)

That should work . . . and there's no problem with having more than one 'evil' empire. I'm always partial to the evil empire that things it's doing what's best for you.

The world consists of a series of earthmotes, ranging from continent sized, down to a few dozen yards across. All things in the world, constantly feel the tug of The Maw. This is the source of what modern humans call gravity. The earthmotes are fragments of the great flat disk of the world that the Gods, from their Astral domains, held suspended for eons. Now, the fragmented web of power left after the Sundering is the only thing that keeps the world as intact as it is. The web also is what keeps the air from all being sucked into the Maw as well.

I'm gonna run this as #2, above.

There will be a prison vessel, that also carries valuable cargo. This prison vessel is carrying enemies of the Treylana Empire. The Treylanae are a group of highly regimented Eladrin who dominate this region. The ship is headed to "The Rock", a notorious prison mote.

The Vessel is going to be attacked by Githyanki Pirates. All players must be on one bvessel or the other, and are making a commitment to justify why the characters all join up. My default assumption is you are prisoners of the eladrin. Pirate captives or merchants on the Eladrin vessel too. You could even be mercenary crew on either vessel, you just have to wind up pissing off the Eladrin and the Gith.
