(5.24 PBP) Vault of the Dracolich (IC) Redux

Urgan holds back, cautious that he doesn't want to mbe in the middle of things.

OOC: Stealth with advantage: 1d20+2=20. Scamp can be up ahead, but is not getting into the fray, just checking things out.

Team Lake

Aywin considers Shade-9, and nods. "I can see in the dark as elves can. You should also know that I can hold my breath for very long, so should I fall in the water and don't surface, don't assume that I have passed. Finally, I have an invisible companion that I can send ahead of us to scout. Perhaps she can do so as we get more acquainted with these Kayaks. I also recommend that we keep as stealthy as possible." Looking at Darius he says " Perhaps you can tie your kayak to mine so we can avoid a light?" In the same breath, he adds. "I also recommend we be as quiet as possible and signal me when you have something to say. " He then quietly holds the orb around his neck and moves his hand, and a quiet murmur is heard by all one after the other This will keep our talking discreet.
Aywin's speech is unusual, he doesn't seem to inhale very much. You also notice that every minute or so he closes his eyes longer than normal for blinking.

OOC: Sending Svetlana (invisible Imp familiar) to scout ahead. I haven't detailed her but I've added a block in my character sheet in the RG. Also forgot to take out the gold for the casting & modified my character entry to take that into consideration. Removed heavy crossbow for the gold and spare components for future castings should she fall.

Also, if no one took a sending stone, Aywin would have taken one, if ok.

Shade-9 matched the cadence of Loklafd's rhythmic paddling mimicking the subtle shifts in balance and stroke length necessary for optimal glide.

Without looking over from his stroke the warforged initiated a low vocal exchange: "you are genasi?"
he stated to Aywin, his tone inquisitive, not a query but a confirmation of deduction, derived from observation and Aywins words.

The mention of an invisible companion had not been expected however and Shade-9's optics narrowed reflexively scanning about attempting to locate her presence. But Svetlana remained undetected, the spectral range of the warforged's visual sensors had not been updated
[Flag:Visual Sensor Update Required - Arcane Detection Protocols].

"you're companion is airbourne?" he continued with interest seeking a better understanding of the untracked variable "Aerial overwatch would significantly increase our operational viability. Early deployment is recommended"

At the suggestion of tethering the kayaks, Shade-9 nodded agreement "maintaining full darkness as we navigate the caves is advised. I am fully functional in total darkness and can remain unseen. If illumination is required I will follow in the shadows"

OOC: good to know about Svetlana, she ought to be useful. I dont know too much about genasi, except you can levitate and in 5e practically everything except human has darkvision. Interesting about the breathing thing, Shade-9 doesnt breath either, which means both of us could fully submerge in the lake if we need to.

We are in two man kayaks, so if Darius is happy to trust Bjorn we can progress with no lights. Good idea to tie the kayaks together once we go underground anyway.

Loklafd listened to his group's discussion about tying together the kayaks, and he paddled over to show them which was the best part of the boat's structure to tie to, without doing damage if there was a sudden pull. However, he suggested, "You shouldn't do it until you are within the relative calm of the undergound lake. The current is much too strong in the river, and you'd be likely to snag the tie-line on a rock, or capsize a boat that is suddenly pulled to one side or another."

He spoke as they left the lake to travel down toward the lake. The closer they got to the lake, the louder the sound of its water became. As they rounded a corner of rock, Loklafd, who was in the lead, suddenly dropped downward over a small waterfall, and then he was in the river proper. He spun his kayak expertly to meet the current, and he called back, "Be careful as you drop and reach the current, it is treacherous!"

They were not terribly far from the Gatehouse, so he did not shout, but his words were masked by the roar of the river, swollen as it was from Spring melt and recent rain.

OOC: Oh, yeah - they may have downplayed the danger. But you're Adventurers! You love this stuff, right?

Shade-9's optics narrowed as he focussed on Loklafd's every movement, shifting his weight low and centered as they approached the waterfall, leaning back to stabilize, his paddle held flat across the bow to brace and balance the craft...

OOC: bring it on!

Aywin silently nods to both questions. He whispers back through his spell: indeed I am planetouched; a blessing and curse I bear. You will come to meet my companion at the time of her choosing; she prefers to remain invisible

Copper: Team Ambush.

The goliath quietly and causally climbs over rocks and trees to get into a position high above the unsuspecting mercenaries. Then gives Corrah a hand signal to indicate he is ready and in position.

OOC: Stealth check!
Stealth: 1D20+7 = [10]+7 = 17
Copper can start an attack from the trees, if possible, above the hapless mercs.

Torhak Stoneveil - TEAM AMBUSH

Torhak follows the group taking out his weapons.
"I'll be close by. Don't come out and stop them. We just attack. They are guards and anything out of the ordinary this far out will put them on alert. Don't offer to talk, we just attack. Get the coachmen first so the horses can be controlled, we don't want them bolting forward."
This was the most taciturn ranger spoke until now, but it seems he knows his ambushes.

Stealth for ambush:1d20+5 = [10]+5 = 15
Animal handling:1d20+4 = [1]+4 = 5 - this will be fun when it comes to that :D

Team Ambush

Copper and Corrah had found themselves a ledge above the road, where two trees grew out of the cliffside. They took a tree each, from which to lay covering fire, as Shamal, Merrick, Torhak, and Scamp continued down the road, working their way forward. Urgan, Lorent, and Terrin held back among some trees, a level above the others.

As the sound of the wagon grew closer, Shamal and Scamp took cover behind some bushes that were under a few trees, while Torhak stepped behind a large boulder. Merrik, however, stayed in the open as two mercenaries, who were far in front of the wagon, came around a bend in the road. When they saw him, they shouted a warning to the wagon and drew their weapons.

(General Features)
Difficult Terrain Trees. Everything if you're moving "upward".
Cover Trees & Rocks. (Also, the "ledge". For example, Torhak as shown here has cover from the Mercs, but the Wagon also has cover from him. That cover goes away if he moves up to the ledge above them.)
Hazards Cliffs (Each level is about 30ft above the next, give or take. They can be 'slid down' using movement & a dc15 STR Athletics or DEX Acrobatics Check. Failure does 2d6 Bludgeoning and leaves you prone on the nearest "road" space. Please roll damage for yourself if you try it & fail.
