5E: Converting AD&D Monsters to Fifth Edition

Yeah my impression is that it is a great curved blade - so considering it more like a curved greatsword. At the moment, max average damage is 108. I'd maybe nudge the blade's additional fire damage down a bit to (say) 9 (2d8)

UPDATE: on thinking about it, I've nudged down and aligned fire damage on the scimitar and punch attacks to 9 (2d8)

A Huge greatsword would normally do 21 (6d6) slashing as base damage. Add STR +7 plus 9 (2d8) fire will make the average damage 37 per attack, which'll definitely put the DPR way over the 120 or so the desired Challenge Rating is aiming for once we factor in the other damage-dealing actions we were contemplating.

That is if you're wanting to stick to it having a triple attack Multiattack. If we make it a two attack Multiattack then keeping the DPR within the target boundaries is way easier since we'll have more room to manoeuvre.

A double attack Multiattack is good enough for a Balor which has the CR 19 we're aiming at.

It'd probably give us space to increase the fire damage above 2d8, which seems a bit miserly for that CR. A Balor's flaming sword does 3d8, which seems more reasonable for a high-power monster.

EDIT: I think a Huge Longsword is also worth considering as a weapon, which'll also lower the DPR as it'd have an average damage 4½ points lower than a greatsword, assuming it's wielded two-handed.

Ok, dropped to 2 attacks/rd and made scimitar thus:

Scorching Scimitar. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 23 (3d10 + 7) slashing damage plus 13 (3d8) fire damage.

The damage quantity works for me, but I wonder if we should tweak the name or call it something else since Scimitar has a base d6 damage specified for it in 5E.

Off the top of my head, how about Scorching Great Scimitar or Scorching Executioner's Scimitar for the former, or Scorching Tulwar or Scorching Falchion for the latter?

Hang on...don't we have:

Wish Granting. The efreeti firelord can grant wishes to a creature that isn't a genie. Once the genie has granted its limit of three wishes, it can't grant wishes again for 1 year), and cosmic law dictates that the same genie can expend its limit of wishes on a specific creature only once in that creature's existence.

To be granted a wish, a creature within 60 feet of the efreeti noble states a desired effect to it. The genie can then cast the wish spell on the creature's behalf to bring about the effect. An efreeti noble will try to pervert the intent of a wish by exploiting the wish's poor wording. The perversion of the wording is usually crafted to be to the genie's benefit.

Yeah, it'll need that but I hadn't gotten around to adding it to the Working Draft.

Should the "efreeti noble" in the above be changed to efreeti firelord?
