Agree that alot of words is unwieldy

OK

CR 4 guy ---> Gallant

Boss-type with spellcasting --> Warhawk

PS: this CR 2 version was more in line with my orginal idea so yeah

So are we both OK with the names and game mechanics of the CR 2 Griffon Rider and CR 4 Griffon Rider Gallant?

Might as well whip up a Challenge 1 Novice too while I'm at it…

Boss-type with spellcasting --> Warhawk

I'm liking Warlock a bit better. Warhawk just doesn't seem very "spellcaster" like to me, it sounds more like a martial specialist.

It would benefit from having the name of a magical profession.

Amiraspian Griffon Rider Warlock just seems less clunky, although it is a bit lacking in martial emphasis.

Maybe Warhawk Mage?

The full title of Amiraspian Griffon Rider Warhawk Mage is long-winded, but we'll be shortening it to "warhawk mage" in the game mechanics, so it shouldn't get cumbersome.

Or some other relatively simple two-word combo: Arcane Knight, Battle Mage, War Shaman, Eldritch Master…

Okay, we can squeeze in another Hit Dice and give the basic Griffon Rider Hit Points 66 (12d8 + 12) while keeping it Challenge Rating 2.

A Novice Challenge 1 Rider can look like this:

Griffon Rider Junior said:
Amiraspian Griffon Rider Novice
Medium humanoid, any non-lawful alignment
Armor Class 14 (chain shirt)
Hit Points 44 (8d8 + 8)
Speed 30 ft.

STR

CON
INT

CHA
17 (+3)
13 (+1)

Saving Throws DEX +3, CON +3
Skills Acrobatics +3, Animal Handling +3, Athletics +4, Perception +3
Senses darkvision 60 ft., passive Perception 13
Languages Common and either Giant, Gnoll or Common
Challenge 1 (200 XP) Proficiency Bonus +2

[*]SNIP (same as other Riders.[*]

Actions

Battleaxe. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) slashing damage, or 8 (1d10 + 3) slashing damage if used with two hands.

Longbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 150/600 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d8 + 1) piercing damage.

Spear. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) piercing damage, or 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage if used with two hands to make a melee attack.

Bonus Actions

Eye of the Eagle. The griffon rider selects a target it can see. As long as the griffon rider maintains concentration, it can attack the selected target without disadvantage on attack rolls from its Poor Depth Perception. The griffon rider can end this effect as a free action, literally in an eye blink.
 Should the griffon rider already have an Eye of the Eagle target when it uses Eye of the Eagle, the griffon rider gains advantage on its next ranged attack roll against the selected target if it still has concentration.

Reactions

Slow Fall. The griffon rider novice can use a reaction when it falls to reduce any falling damage it takes by 10 points.

A regular Amiraspian Guard has 22 hit points, so if we give the Novice Griffon Rider 44 hit points and the regular Griffon Rider 66 hit points it scales nicely.

EDIT: I'll post some Working Drafts for the new ranks plus a spellcaster (whatever we decide to call it)

Actually am thinking they are sort of...battle druids? Something more priestly or sorcerous than scholarly mages?

(thinking some sort of nomadic Scythian spellcaster)
