D&D 5E 5E Lifetime Sales in North American Big Box Stores Revealed

I've seen them there, I just assumed (for no particular reason I guess) that they didn't sell much. I've never thought of buying D&D stuff at a bookstore.
I almost exclusively buy my D&D books from Books a Million. I'll get a book here and there off Amazon when the price is right. The closest FLGS is 3 hours away from me or I'd give them my business (I make sure to get something when I'm in the area).

Those numbers are interesting...they're honestly higher than I expected. I don't typically buy books from big-box stores, so I always assume that nobody else does either.

I've bought seven hardcopies of the 5E PHB over the years...one for myself, one for my wife, and one for each member of my gaming group (Christmas presents). I bought every single one of them from my FLGS, Guardian Games.

I think that FLGS and Amazon make up a hefty chunk of sales not counted here, which suggests some hefty numbers under the surface to my mind.

A lot of people in this country have a local B&N, but no local hobby shop in driving distance.

Heck, some parts, Target is the only local bookstore...

Though I do reckon D&D probsvly sells way more st hobby shops than most books, Mark Rosewater on the Magic team has been explaining to fans for years that WotC actually sells more Magic cards at WalMart, Target, and CVS Pharmacy than they do at FLGS, and that the vast majority of Magic players have never played in a store at all.
Fans listen? I can't think of a fan group that actually listens, at least to a direct source, more than to a speculative or side source or mostly to anecdotal sources. Toy sales, for example, in some fan groups, are so overanalyzed that fans will convince themselves that their favorite toyline is dying because it is A: available or B: sold out. Both scenarios are bad with A being shelf warmers and B signs of bad distribution. Little noting of "two weeks ago it was full and now it's empty" equating to sell out and popular product when it is consistent and that a shelf warmer doesn't equate to a poor selling product line. So it is not a surprise people don't listen to Rosewater about where they actually sell product because it seems counterintuitive much like adult toy collectors not equating that toys sell to children because adult collectors aren't enough to keep even Hot Wheels on the shelf.

I said basically the same thing a few posts before yours. I've seen the books in bookstores and target; but, I had never thought of buying them there. However, others have pointed out that there a many places with no FLGS close, so Amazon or big box is the only option.
