Actions

Stylets. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (4d6 + 3) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it is grappled (escape DC 13). Until this grapple ends, the female dire mosquito doesn't attack. Instead, at the start of each of the mosquito's turns, the target loses 17 (4d6 + 3) hit points due to blood loss.
The female dire mosquito can end the grapple by spending 5 feet of her movement. She does so after the target dies or the mosquito drains a total of 60 hit points of blood from her targets.

VARIANT: DISEASED FEMALE DIRE MOSQUITOES
Some female dire mosquitoes carry vile diseases that they spread when they drain blood. A diseased female dire mosquito has a challenge rating of 3 (700 XP) and the following action instead of her normal stylets attack.
Stylets. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (4d6 + 3) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it is grappled (escape DC 13). Until this grapple ends, the female dire mosquito doesn't attack. Instead, at the start of each of the mosquito's turns, the target loses 17 (4d6 + 3) hit points due to blood loss and must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or contract a disease. Until the disease is cured, the target is poisoned and can't regain hit points except by magical means, plus the target's hit point maximum decreases by 13 (2d12) every 24 hours. If the target's hit point maximum drops to 0 as a result of this disease, the target dies.
The female dire mosquito can end the grapple by spending 5 feet of its movement. She does so after the target dies or the mosquito drains a total of 60 hit points of blood from her targets.

Description

male dire mosquitoes are less dangerous than females, larval dire mosquitos are aquatic insects common folk call wrigglers.

ok which one should be the CR 3 one I started statting up?

The "Female Dire Mosquito" is the Challenge 3 one.

As well as the Polyhedron Large monsters there's also a Dungeon adventure with Tiny Giant Mosquitos I fancy converting, since they'd be a suitable basis for a Swarm.

We can worry about those later though.
