Unearthed Arcana 5E Psionics Alert! The Mystic Is Back In Unearthed Arcana

It's back! The long-awaited new version of the mystic - 5th Edition's psionic class - is here. "The mystic class, a master of psionics, has arrived in its entirety for you to try in your D&D games. Thanks to your playtest feedback on the class’s previous two versions, the class now goes to level 20, has six subclasses, and can choose from many new psionic disciplines and talents. Explore the material here—there’s a lot of it—and let us know what you think in the survey we release in the next installment of Unearthed Arcana." Click the image below for the full 28-page PDF!

I like the all in one class they choose to implement, and think that (barring mechanical exploits) using multiclass will be the perfect way to build your psionicist.

Want a sneaky soul knife, multi with rogue.

Take four levels of fighter for a tanky styled mind melter.

Etc etc.

(I realize I am in the SEVERE minority on this one, oh well)

Tony Vargas - Heh. Look I do get it and I'm with you on this, I want a non-supernatural support class - mostly because my current Primeval Thule campaign disallows any class with a cantrip :) - but, dude, you do have to pick your battles. I think a number of people will be fairly content to split the difference here. Yeah, it's not a non-supernatural class, but, it's also not strictly a caster either.

At the very least, we should be happy that we actually HAVE a battlefield support class finally. Even if it isn't strictly the warlord, it's still inspired heavily by one.

Baby steps brother, baby steps. :D

This class is not meant to be multiclassed. It says so in the pdf. This class has not been optimized for multiclassing. It is not going to work well as a multiclass. It will be broken. They knew this. They said this. It will be tweaked before ultimately being released, and hopefully be more balanced for multiclassing.

Or 5 levels of purple knight fighter with Ardent...

Really I'm okay if they do allow MC I just think they could really push the design space of the Mystic if they didn't have to worry about MC shenanigans. This class is already very unique and very complicated vs most of the classes (one might say It's Advanced, which more and more seems to be the theme of the crunch book) and I say lean into that even more.

I'm happy for fans of the Ardent, though the sole 3.5 Ardent fan who's commented seemed disappointed.

As far as 'battlefield support class,' if concept counted for nothing in 5e, there was already the Valor Bard & War Cleric, and the Avatar Mystic adds a third sub-class - The Paladin might qualify, too for that matter, on functionality, alone.

But, on function alone, the game doesn't need but three or four classes, so that's moot.

A bit of a daydream here, but it would be nice if they could design an "Order of the Fist" as an alternative monk and to better support that archetype.

Otherwise, I like what I am seeing.

Doesn't mean people can't share their feedback on the MCing issues they see before answering the survey.

Doesn't seem like it would be too hard to do.

Tripling a monk's ki almost tracks with the amount of psi points a mystic has at half level. Ki transfers well to Spell Points. The Monk is already a half-caster of sorts.
