D&D 5E [5e] QL's Al-Qadim Game

Sorry, I'm just getting excited. I like having magic, especially illusion stuff, because it lets me think outside the box, but I've always played low level games, so I never get ahold of any real magic items.

Having magic items changes things. The item can do the magic, and I'm free to play around with the character. Like Rogues. I've never played one. Well, once, but he multied into a Warlock at level 2, because I can't seem to not have magic.

But looking at Rogue's normal abilities, besides the subclass ones, and at higher levels, Rogues are BEASTS. At level 11, 6d6 sneak attack, which triggers anytime he has advantage, or when an ally is close to his target. Halve any damage he gets, better Dex saves against spells, can't fail a skill check if he has proficiency, hell at level 13, he can't roll less than a 20 on any skill check that he has expertise in, which is four skills at this point. It's insane!

Matthan tglassy I just PMed you all the playtest docs. I'll be updating the subclasses to v0.2 and spells to v0.2 shortly.

While you can devise whatever type of group you want (e.g. the former party composition was about "we don't sneak, we talk out our problems"), I will suggest a frontline fighter type would balance the party well.

If someone was leaning paladin... Currently, I don't have any playtest subclasses for the paladin, though we may be collaborating with another group of gamers working on a 5e Al-Qadim conversion who do have a paladin subclass. And also Jeremy Forbing released a supplement on DM's Guild which has a paladin subclass I'd be willing to allow.
Shayuri's character Ankabut is built using all core options (i.e. no playtest material), so would be a good point of reference against a rogue or monk built using playtest stuff.

I'm going to take some time to absorb all the information, but right now, I'm leaning towards Fighter-Guardian. If we pick up anyone else, I would just like to throw out that two Guardians would be absolutely brutal fighting beside each other.

Ok, so definitely going Rogue. Desert Rider Background, but the Sa'Luk theme, and I would very much like to replace my background trait with Flippant Charm. We're going to be talking to Shieks and all kinds of stuff, and this lets met be a disrespectful pain in the arse but still get away with it. I love it.

I was just going to stick with Thief, but after reading up on it, I think I'm going to go with Mechanician for my Rogue Archetype. I did have some questions on that, because it clearly lists it as a Rogue Archetype, but there are parts that talk about it being a Wizard tradition. Is Machanician available for a Rogue Archetype?

So basically, he's a desert riding Sa'Luk who goes from place to place, living off his wits and charms, and creates little machines in his downtime, usually to act as scouts or alarms or such. He basically only trusts his own little machines, and he names each one and treats them much better than he treats people. Like his horse, which is his best...um...living friend. you know, since all his other friends are little mechanicals.

Perhaps he is related to someone important in some way, which contributes to his getting away with his flippancy in a realm where dishonoring someone usually can lead to death? Or something.

I will need some guidance on the Mechanicals. I know I can keep a certain number active equal to my intelligence score, but I can have as many as I want actually built and waiting to activate. I can bestow some of my rogueyness to them, and at level 13, I don't have to lose that ability when I do. Otherwise, they're basically like animal companions?

BTW, bestowing sneak attack to a Tiny Mechanical snake...

It is interesting that in the first paragraph, it says they can't attack, then later says they can. Typo? Because they can obviously attack.

I'm excited. This is a very multi layered character, being a charming rogue who shirks social norms and gets away with it, while also being a master of disguise who can convince anyone he is anyone, who likes to tinker on little robots when nobody is looking. Man. He might become one of my favorite characters so far. There's just so much I can do with him.

Here's what I'm thinking for build.

Going with what I said earlier, a Dessert Rider Sa'Luk Machanician with the Flippant Charm feature rather than Dessert Rider feature.

I'd like his main weapon to be a Shamsir, and for it to be a Genie Slayer. It'll be my Rare item. I saw where a Shamsir is basically a slashing rapier, 1d8, finesse, etc. It's perfect for the look I'm going for. He'd also have a dagger, at least, and likely dual wield, but I'm thinking about that.

Taking the Actor Feat at level 4 and Mounted Combat at level 8. I realized that Mounted Combat gives advantage to attack rolls on non mounted creatures, which gives sneak attack, plus being able to have the horse disengage and do 'drive by sneak attacks'. Not sure how often it'll be viable, but I plan on having my horse with me anytime we're out and about, so... Means I can't get a 20 in dex, but hey, an 18 is still respectable, and expertise will make up the difference. And I like having as many ways as possible to get advantage/sneak attack.

Hat of disguise and actor work great together, and the Ring of Mind Shielding helps sell it. It also makes him cocky. Which could be a problem.

As for his other uncommon magical item, I'm now debating between Gloves of Thievery and an Aba of the Dessert. On the one hand, the gloves will make it so he can't roll less than a 27 on Sleight of Hand checks. On the other, the Aba of the Dessert will up his survivability, and I feel that's a big part of his character. Survival. Thoughts?

I'll post his character sheet here in a bit, once I've written it up.

Edit: Actually, I'll take Mounted Combat at the next level. I'd rather have the 20 on Dex for now.
