A House Rule for classes...

An idea for a house rule I may use at some future time...

Poking through the character builder, I noticed that under the little house rule icon, you can allow "illegal elements" to be chosen. In other words, for example, it allows a character to pick any power from any class.

So here's my thought:

At character creation, you choose a class, and that determines your basic class abilities. However, powers can be chosen from any class list that has the same power source.

So, for example, a Fighter could choose his powers from any Martial class (Fighter, Ranger, Rogue, Warlord, etc.), whereas a Wizard could choose his from any Arcane class (Wizard, Warlock, Sorcerer, Bard, etc.).

What's your opinion? It seems like this could provide some interesting variety. Would this be something that could be too easily exploited?

This would work well for martial, divine, psionic, and primal classes.

Barbarians and monks should be considered martial for this house rule.

Arcane classes are too specialised.

First off, you can assume that most martial characters will take Twin Strike and be carrying an offhand or double weapon. This means fighters will lay down two marks per round and have a very respectable AC, especially if they take the tempest technique. Sneak attack is still only once per round... In short, I think its a big boost for fighters, probably not so much for everyone else. If you had a party of four martial characters all cross-roled, it would be manageable, I think. I really like the idea for divine classes. The primal classes have such distinct flavor each that I'm not sure they would be cohesive mixed up like that. I also think you could cross Sorcerer, Wizard and maybe even Warlock powers without too much trouble.
