A question for PCGen users

fine and dandy

You are all absolutely right, these are not the PCGen message boards, we can't (and don't) moderate here...

But we can (and have) made our wishes known.

If you can't respect those wishes, then you obviously can't respect those of us busting our humps for everything we have done and are trying to do.

And that I think sums it all up.

But I will respect Morrus' right to let you do as you wish on his boards.

That is in case, for instance, you didn't realize that WotC was a for profit company. Duh!

This is like complaining that chocolate *always* tastes like chocoloate.

Argh.

There are two types of for profit companies. Companies like Malhovic, FFG, and Mongoose, who (while still in it for the money) know that they have customers who are people, and who aren't there just to hand over cash like zombies. Then there's companies who have proven time and again that if it can earn them a few extra cents, they'd probably sell their first borns to slave traders.

And Karianna, as stated above, I don't think that they aren't meeting with you guys, and I don't think I said they wouldn't. However, I do believe that they will blow you off for several months, until you guys leave them alone.

I also said, both here and on the PCGen mailing list, that I really, really hope I'm wrong, and that WotC is willing to discuss allowing the stuff back in. We'll all just have to wait and see.

And one more thing again...

Karianna and Bryan, both of you are great people, and I hope that you do keep us informed as to what WotC is telling you guys. As it is now, I don't want to stop using PCGen, since it's such a fantastic program, so I guess I'll just have to stop buying WotC stuff until it's supported.

Keep up the fantastic work.

Back to the original question though: does anybody have peoperly converted lst files for WotC material?

Thanks!

James, you can manually convert the lst files within PCGen itself, if you still have them. Under the Tools menu, there is a LST Converter utility. Unfortunately, it doesn't convert them over completely (there are only limited options for some of the LST types, not all of them). I have used these to convert a limited amount of data, to keep PCgen useful for me.

it'll do feats, skills, spells, domains, classes, and races ( i believe)

handy dandy tool and works like a champ..

Please explain to me what your plans are if WoTC decides to deny you access to their intellectual property?

If WoTC shuts you out is there really any reason to continue with the software?

If they shut you out you will be forced to do one of two things.

1) Return to your previous ways, which will further alienate a good number of the d20 publishers who view your past behavior as criminal. WoTC will send their lawyers and that will be that.

2) Continue on and develop a piece of software that will move completely out to the fringe. Yes, you'll support Darwins World and a few other d20 products, but without D&D you'll never have a widely used product.

There is no bright and shining future for PC Gen. Your day has come and past. RIP PC Gen.

I hope that I'm totally and completely wrong about this. :(

Why are people so fixated on the splat books? There's nothing to say that you can't create your own.

I don't see them doing 1), and I don't think the other publishers will appreciate you calling their work "fringe". Further, d20M is coming out soon, and most is going to be OGC.

I am quite positive you are.

While I don't agree with tburdett, I think you've got this one wrong. I haven't the slightest idea how to go about creating my own LST file, and from what I've gleaned, it's a non-trivial task that requires a significant investment of time, effort and research. All of which defeat the purpose of using PCGen, for me. Saying that I can create it on my own is like saying that I can write my own copy of Unreal Tournament 2003...it's possible, but not likely and not a simple task.

That said, I think tburdett is about as far off base as can be. It took PCgen over a year and a half to become usable for me...but I like it quite a bit, now. WOTC has already committed to OGL'ing a lot of material, soon. Moreover, it was my impression that many d20 publishers LIKED being in PCGen, and some even submitted their own LST files to the PCGen team for inclusion. WOTC is the only company with any issues about it. Judging by comments from the PCGen team, WOTC is dealing in good faith, taking steps they don't need to unless they are intent on continuing to do so, and trying to get their act together. Considering that they company has had three rounds of layoffs in as many years, I think it's amazing they've been able to keep it together as much as they have.
