A question for the Aussies

I don't think I've ever heard of them at Chilis... that's where baby back ribs live.

... Mmmm. Pork.
It's an appetizer--the Awesome Blossom.

Their Baby Back Ribs are really good (that song is addictive), but I always feel guilty ordering it because of the price. If I weren't a poor college student, though...

I recently learned from my friend's Australian husband that Australians, as a general rule, don't like macaroni and cheese or hot dogs.

WHAT?? No one told my wife this! She's from Melbourne, and likes it when I make Mac 'n' Cheese with Hot Dog cut up in it.

Of course not, look at where they are from. They like cheese-n-macaroni and dog hots...

I'm not Australian but I've been to Australia a couple of times including the outback.

I don't know about the Outback Steakhouse chain but I've been to a few BBQ restaurants in Australia where you cook the steak yourself. One of these near the entrance to the Jenolan Caves in the Blue Mountains was particularly good. :)

I'm an Australian who lives in the Blue Mountains to the west of Sydney - not far from Jenolan Caves - and I can vouch for the quality of the food at the restaurant. (Incidentally, the Jenolan Caves pretty amazing. I'm sure there's a passage into the Underdark down there somewhere :p )

Still...I'm surprised that this is a conversation about Australian food and nobody has brought up the subject of Vegemite yet....

that's a british thing too.

diaglo "who grew up eating marmite and vegemite" Ooi

so, i looked up "Australian Cuisine" on wikipedia, because i wanted to see what horrors different countries devised as a method of further ruining the tastebuds of the human race.

I want to know who thought a "pie floater" was a good idea. Same goes for a "cheesymite scroll".

On the other hand, i can say that a carpetbag steak sounds like a reasonable dish, and that's coming from a vegan. Speaking of which, is there much in the way of vegetarian restaurants over there?

Incidentally, the Jenolan Caves pretty amazing...
Agreed. I couldn't help but feel when I was there that it would make an absolutely great venue for a D&D convention. Talk about atmosphere! :D

Sorry for hijacking the thread. :o

Yeah, Chili's invented them under the name of Awesome Blossom. Pretty much every sit-down casual dining place has the same thing going on now.

Umbra--the idea of importing all your best steaks to Japan--that's probably the saddest thing I've ever heard.

Oops! My GF worked for the Australian embassy in Tokyo and was partly responsible for the highly successful Aussie Beef campaign. Mea girlfriend culpa! :o :p
