A Teacher for Laynie: Mystery at the Academy (Part 2)

"I see...still, though, you had faith in Misha but not in me. Maybe I'm just getting too old to connect with the students," she sighs, "Regardless, this incident can't look good for the Sice staff, and it gives major kudos to Daryne. That's why Kharisa is on damage control, in case you were wondering."

"Trying to make me look bad by nitpicking is damage control?" Vanitri chuckles. "And I had fears it was you, but I certiantly wasn't ready to believe it till I had concrete proof. Besides, I'd certaintly have had more trouble dealing with a woman with your wonderful combination of elvish beauty and human charm."

"Well, it's not nitpicking. Technically by Academy rules, if she had actually caught you trespassing, she could have killed you right there without any consequences leveled against her. Still, I think it is in bad taste," Rayne agrees, "No matter what spin she wants to put on it, to me you're still a hero."

"Well, yes. I'm sure she wouldn't have, but the bylaws state that she can take any measures to deal with trespassers on Sice's most restricted areas, so I was just going with the most extreme there. The point is, you did break some very grave and serious rules, so it isn't as if she's just nitpicking minor things here. However, I think most people share my sentiment that whether or not you broke serious rules, you also saved many lives. Who knows how many more people Elayna would have murdered in her twisted spite?"

Vanitri nods. "I think she was convinced she was doing some good, though I'm not sure if that was for show, or if she truely believed it."

As they approach the dorm, Vanitri sighs, "Well, I guess it's back to the doldrums for me. Seems everyone wants me for dinner, but I have to catch up on my school work as well. And it seems one of my study partners disapeared."

"Well, I'm sure if you asked, the other students would be happy to study with the new hero, especially if you are willing to regale them with tales of your exploits. If not, you can always ask for help from the graduate students or professors too. I hope that classes aren't a doldrums for you, though. We like to think that school is fun."

"Well, I do what I can, but I'm used to the freedom of the roads, not the confines of a classroom."

"Thank you for your conern though. Your support throught this has helped, even when I was a bit worried about you."

"Hmm, well it would be a shame for you to just drop out. I hope you can at least stay for a Journeyman's Degree. Many with a strong wanderlust will leave with that degree and head out into the world to explore and learn more, perhaps returning for the full Wizard's Degree or even the graduate work to become a certified High Arcanist. Plus, I know everyone here would be sad to see you go so soon, particularly Laynie. I may not be human myself, but I've seen enough of them grow up to know that she still needs a bit more time before she's ready for you to leave her on her own yet, I think."

Vanitri nods, "I'll be hear till she's ready. I've promised her that much."

Vanitri turns and smiles to Rayne, "Good night Ms Rayne. And thanks again."
