Session 25 (8-3-2023): Shadows of the Ancients

Zuna returns to the woman in the blue coat and approaches her. Zuna manages to convince her that she can be trusted. The woman offers various items, including firearms, a sword (32,000 gp), and an amulet (28,000 gp) reminiscent of the Ancients. Zuna notices that the man with the woman is actually a golem. Zuna decides to trade her cloak of smoke for the amulet.

After the fair, the group heads to the prison where Rock Rackus is held. Rock Rackus is an arrogant and eccentric character who considers himself highly suitable to lead the Dockers in their uprising. He makes all sorts of strange claims. He also says he can teleport the group to a random location if they free him. He offers this because a skyseer told him that the people of the RHC would solve his murder. He doesn't fully believe in that superstition but wants to stay on their good side. The group keeps his offer in mind.

That evening, there’s another debriefing with Stover Delft. He advises them to go to Pardwight University tomorrow with the staff, as they might know more about it there.

500 A.O.V., autumn, day 3
The next morning, a group of colleagues asks the group to come look at a strange case. There is a dead man with a heavy blow to his head and his hands tied with a metal rod. He was wearing a kind of chain, as pieces of it are scattered on the ground near the body. He’s been dead for quite some time and wasn’t found sooner because he was in the basement of a factory, where strong industrial odors linger. The man was about 50-60 years old, with socks stitched with the initials A.G. A golem lies nearby, shattered into many pieces, but appears to have been of high quality with potential for high intelligence. There's also a rusty metal ring nearby, reminiscent of teleportation rings they've seen before. The group advises looking for signs of teleportation. The other RHC members thank them and continue their investigation.

Next, the group goes to Pardwight University with the staff. They quickly find Professor Hans Weber, a professor of antiquities and the current curator of the natural history museum. He recognizes the staff immediately. Recently, a ziggurat (an ancient pyramid-like structure) of the Ancients was discovered in the High Bayou. He had sent a colleague, Dr. Xambria Meredith, to investigate it. Xambria sent a list of artifacts she found and intended to bring back. However, something went wrong, many people died, and Xambria was the sole survivor. She is now at the university. Hans mentions that they may speak with Xambria, though she hasn’t been doing well since the incident. As the artifacts were part of his research, the staff officially belongs to him, but he allows the RHC to keep it temporarily for investigation.

Xambria seems confused. On one hand, she provides answers, but on the other, she appears not to remember certain details. She explains: She has a sponsor, Caius Bergeron, who provided funding. She sent him updates on her findings, and he was especially interested in a "golden seal," a large, round golden plate. A while later, she found the plate and informed Caius, along with a list of all the artifacts she discovered. A few days later, Caius sent a team of specialists by train to Bole, a nearby town: three tiefling spellcasters and two human guards. She can't recall the exact timing, but news of a major scandal in Flint also surfaced around then. It was some weeks ago.

She led the specialists to the dig site, where they spent a long time working on the golden disc. She returned to the train to fetch more supplies, but when she came back, she found bodies from her team scattered around, and the specialists were nowhere to be seen. She quickly fled back to Flint. She believes the specialists hired by Caius were responsible. She hasn't been able to contact Caius since. She has given some clues about reaching the ziggurat but can't quite remember its exact appearance.

The group prepares to head to the ziggurat.

Session 26 (22-3-2023): The Secrets of the High Bayou

500 A.O.V., autumn, day 6
The group heads toward the ziggurat, guided by clues and a map created by Xambria. To get there, they first take the train to the city of Bole (a one-day journey). From Bole, they travel through the hills to the village of Agate (another one-day journey). Finally, they trek through the swamp (the High Bayou) to reach the ziggurat (one more day).

At a clearing, they see the ziggurat. Quite a bit before the ziggurat, a bit they spot the archaeologists' camp, where there are three corpses (archaeologists). Zuna experiences a vision of the three archaeologists clutching their heads in severe pain before collapsing.

The group enters the ziggurat. They descend a very long staircase, but when they look back up, it seems they’ve only taken a few steps—they’re still close to the entrance. Inside, they find various rooms with traps, including a puzzle room with colored stones, bridges, and walls.

In this last puzzle, Zuna manages to reach the opposite side. She touches a white stone and receives a vision. Three orcs, dressed in primitive hides, hold a staff, a sword, and an amulet. They stand before a golden plate in the wall, surrounded by monsters similar to those seen at the arms fair, though these monsters are partially transparent. The creatures seem reluctant to attack. The one with the sword speaks in the Ancients language (but Zuna understands it): “War beasts of Gidim! The seal of Toteth has failed!” The one with the amulet replies, “They come from Gidim, but I sense the dust of Apet upon them.” The one with the sword retorts, “You can smell them later—think about them so I can strike!” The one with the staff closes his eyes, and one of the creatures loses its transparency, making it vulnerable to the sword.

From this moment, Zuna can speak Ancient and learns how to weaken a creature with the Thoughtform subtype. Zuna shares this information with the group.

The group also finds a room with a map of the ancient world. A light shines on their current location and on another point along the coast of Ber.

They discover a chamber containing a golden seal. When they remove it, they find a portal leading to a void, where a human body floats with its face “destroyed.” There are no signs of decay on the corpse.

Every time Zuna encounters a corpse in the ziggurat, she has a vision of its death; in this case, it’s of an evil creature attacking them.

They accidentally trigger a trap, causing dark green acid to slowly begin flowing into the ziggurat…

Session 27 (10-5-2023): The Voice of Rot's Demand

The group does everything they can to escape as quickly as possible. Morthos tries to take the golden seal with him, but he can’t manage to get it past a certain staircase, so he leaves it behind. Meanwhile, Oskár discovers that the seal isn’t made entirely of gold; it’s granite with a thin layer of gold. Earlier, they also found a room where just such a seal could have been located.

The layer of acid keeps rising, so they race away. Along the way, they encounter undead that have come to life and fight against them. Among them are three mummies that suspiciously resemble the three half-orcs from Zuna's vision.

Thankfully, they manage to escape safely outside. However, once outside, they see creatures approaching them in the rain: zombie crocodiles, skeletons, empty spider carcasses, swarms of centipedes, bats, and bloodthirsty birds. They hear a voice: "Climb!"

They realize their only possible escape is to climb up the ziggurat. They climb to the top. Then it seems as if the entire swamp comes to life. A gigantic serpent, made of swamp material and bearing a decayed skull, rises up. It devours a large number of the undead and looks at the group with milky eyes.

It introduces itself as the Voice of Rot, a fey titan, and says the following:

My slumber is disturbed. You, agents of King Kelland, shall redress this offense. Most that fled your mortal trap were mute beasts. One had reason. It can be judged. Follow the scent of its homeland’s blood. Find it. Cut its flesh, then do as you please. Kill it, and it will rot. Send it home, and it will despair. Either, and I shall be appeased.

He threatens to kill the townspeople of Agate if they don’t fulfill his demand to eliminate someone who has escaped from this place.

Note: Tbh, the players found this a bit weird. Why is some ancient titan talking to some relatively low-level adventurers? Also, they are crap at word puzzles, so they didn't have a clue what it meant, and even when I explained it, they still didn't get what to do. Also: 'I don't care that much about people in some village I have never heard of and never will hear about again.' They never thought about this fey titan anymore.

Session 28 (17-5-2023): Secrets in Flint and the Quest for the Golden Seal

The group decides to return to Flint to continue their investigation.

500 A.O.V., autumn, day 9
Three days later, the group arrives in Flint.
At the RHC, Stover Delft hands Oskár a thesis titled "Methods of Extricating Warriors from a Variety of Tentacled and Tendriled Monsters," written by Colonel Sebastian Harlock. As Oskár studies this document, he learns a new combat technique (Tentacle Technique).
Morthos discreetly receives a note.
After discussing for a while, the group decides to split up. Morthos stays in Flint with Zuna and Trip to continue the investigation, while Galarin and Oskár return to the ziggurat to search for additional clues, such as traces of magic.

500 A.O.V., autumn, day 10
The Flint group is called to a murder scene at the Silver Swan inn. In a room, they find a dead tiefling lying on the bed. A blood trail leads from his mouth to a desk in the room. Entry options are limited: just one door and two small, closed windows.
The victim is identified as Caius Bergeron, the sponsor of the excavations.
Both the door and windows were locked. No teleportation into the room was possible, as the windows were surrounded by a golden thread.
On the desk lies a map of the continent with two circled locations—the ziggurat and a coastal spot in Ber that had come up before, with exact coordinates.
There are also notes about the Ancients. In the desk drawers are research booklets by Xambria's colleagues (but none by Xambria herself).
A closer inspection of the body reveals that Caius's lower jaw is fully dislocated, but more disturbingly, his brain is missing. There is no other visible damage.
He wears a gold ring engraved with "Old Bergeron Gold."
Zuna is unable to communicate with Caius’s corpse.
After the murder scene, Morthos talks to Trip, from whom he buys a hand grenade.
The Flint group decides to head to the ziggurat as well to join their colleagues in the search.

500 A.O.V., autumn, day 12
The first ziggurat group (Galarin and Oskár) arrives at the ziggurat.
They create an ingenious device capable of tracking the energies surrounding the ziggurat.
Following the energy trail, they first detect a very strong trace of an entity, along with weaker traces from a small group that has departed. They pursue these traces further.

500 A.O.V., autumn, day 13
Both groups meet in Agate, where they find a boat with traces of the same energy. Questioning the boat owner, they learn that a group (a tiefling woman, two unarmed individuals, and two armed individuals) rented a boat and carried a large, round package with them.
Oskár develops a theory that this group took the real golden seal, leaving only a fake golden disc behind in the ziggurat.
They rent the boat and follow the trail by water.

500 A.O.V., autumn, day 14
The group arrives in Bole, where they ask around at the train station. They learn that the group they are following rented a rail car for transporting their package.
The group follows them back to Flint, where the group they are following were also heading.

500 A.O.V., autumn, day 15
The group arrives in Flint.
Once again, they question people at the train station and learn the name of the female tiefling: "Finona Duvall". She was clearly the leader of the group.
They also find out that this group had spoken with a tiefling matching the description of Caius Bergeron.
The energy trail dissipates in Flint—there are too many people, and the traces are erased or dispersed.

Session 29 (21-6-2023): The Liberation of Rock Rackus and the Undersea Excavation

500 A.O.V., Autumn, Day 16
The group has been considering the idea of freeing Rock Rackus for a while. With him free, they could quickly teleport to Ber. Some of their leads point to there possibly being another ziggurat. The group goes to speak with Rock Rackus, who remains as exasperating as ever, spouting wild ideas. When they ask about it, he mentions that he once participated in an excavation on behalf of Caius Bergeron, where they unearthed a ziggurat from Jiese, the planet of fire, located in Crisillyir. During this excavation, they removed a golden plate. Rock Rackus’s trial is scheduled for tomorrow, and the group plans a strategy to secure his release.

500 A.O.V., Autumn, Day 17
At the trial, the group acts as reliable witnesses to ensure Rock Rackus is acquitted. The people of Flint are overjoyed by his release. Morthos reveals to the group that he had received orders from a Vekeshi Mystic to kill Rock Rackus, which is why he purchased a grenade from Trip. However, he has since decided not to go through with it, as he disagrees with the directive. That evening, as a thank-you, Rock Rackus teleports the group to Pezarillo, a small fishing village a few hundred kilometers northwest of Ber’s capital, Seobriga. The group spends the night in a tavern in Pezarillo.

500 A.O.V., Autumn, Day 18
The group asks around and learns of an underwater excavation nearby. That sounds like what they're looking for. They hire a boat, complete with a reluctant skipper, offering him a generous sum on behalf of the RHC. Upon arrival, they spot three ships: a small vessel flying Ber’s flag, "La Inspiración"; a tiny boat with Risur’s flag, "Dagger"; and, further out, a larger ship under Crisillyir’s flag, "Il Draçon de Mer," with turbulent waters surrounding it.

As they approach Il Draçon de Mer, they receive signals to keep their distance. The group then heads toward La Inspiración, where they meet the captain, Diego Dolorosa, and an archaeologist named Paco de Los Loros, a goblin. Paco shares that he was hired by Caius Bergeron at the beginning of summer to excavate underwater, following the discovery of the map room by Xambria’s expedition. He found a large golden disk radiating powerful magic. He told Caius about it. Caius then ordered him to stop his investigation until his team arrived, and shortly afterward, Il Draçon de Mer appeared, barring him from further exploration. Paco is furious, as he wanted to complete the excavation himself. The rest of his team is in Pezarillo until they're needed.

Next, the group visits Dagger, which had arrived later. It turns out Dr. Xambria Meredith is on this ship. The Captain is called Jack Glassmaker. Dr. Meredith explains that she had heard from Caius about the discovery of another seal here, prompting her quick journey here to prevent it from being opened and risking a catastrophe similar to her previous excavation. She claims seeing a tentacled monster shortly after speaking with Caius, though her memory is hazy. She offers the group spells for water breathing.

Determined to take action, the group heads to Il Draçon de Mer, ignoring its warnings. The ship opens fire, nearly sinking their boat, but they manage to board Il Draçon de Mer just before their own vessel goes under.

Session 30 (12-7-2023): Seals, Secrets, and Submersion

The group successfully overpowers the other ship.
They tie the captain, Bernardo Molinelli, to the mast.
The captain has little to say; he’s simply here to bring the specialists, who are led by Finona Duvall.
The captain acts a bit strange about his chair in the captain’s cabin.
The group decides to check out the cabin and finds a letter inside. The letter reads:

I won't put it here for copyright reasons, but the notes shared with the players contain the contents of the letter

The group decides to go underwater. Oskár dives down, but is attacked by octopuses and sharks. He fights briefly, then resurfaces.

Session 31 (1-8-2023): Beneath the Waves

Zuna dives underwater in the form of a shark. She communicates with the sharks and convinces them to come to the surface. Meanwhile, on the deck, Morthos, Trip, and Galarin have created some sort of bomb. Zuna swims up and leaps onto the deck as the others throw the bomb overboard. The sharks explode, and it turns out that one of the sharks, like Zuna, is actually a druid.

The group takes a short rest aboard the ship. However, after the rest, the water beneath them becomes extremely turbulent, as if a violent storm is underway—though it’s only the water that’s disturbed, not the weather.

The group decides to explore underwater after all. There, they find shipwrecks and remnants of an ancient temple. Most notably, they see a golden disk held in place by a crane. Someone is performing a ritual, likely causing the turbulent waters. This entire scene is set within an air bubble at the sea floor.

The group launches an attack. However, one of the individuals underwater gets too close to the seal during the attack, breaking the spell that was keeping everything balanced. The seal falls off, and a flood of water and sea creatures pours through a portal that had been concealed behind the seal. A sea monster also emerges.

Now, the group must join forces with the others to close the portal. They manage to reposition the seal with the crane and contain the chaos. They capture any remaining survivors.

Session 32 (23-8-2023): The Golden Seal and the Wrath of the Hydra

They discover that they can cause a rockslide to collapse over the portal, effectively closing it. This way, they can take the seal with them for further investigation. They haul the seal up.

They question the prisoners, but they don’t know much. They say they were working on behalf of Finona, who, however, is dead. Fortunately, Zuna can ask five questions to the dead.

They don’t uncover much noteworthy information, primarily that Caius was the one who gave the orders. She also reveals that she has investigated a total of four ziggurats: “Mavisha” in Ber (which is this one), “Apet” in Risur (which was the previous one), “Jiese” in Crisillyir (which was with Rock Rackus), and “Nem” in the dead magic zone of Danor. Caius was mainly interested in the golden seals.

The goblin Paco is very interested in the golden seal, as it could reveal much about Ber's history, and he is, of course, an archaeologist. The group offers to sell the seal to him for a large sum of gold, but he unfortunately can’t afford it. He asks the group to promise to place it in a respected location in Risur, along with the story that it came from an excavation in Ber.

The group sails back to Pezarillo.

500 A.O.V., autumn, day 19
The group decides to return to Flint with their new ship, Il Draçon de Mer. The Dagger also sets sail back to Flint.

In the evening, they are suddenly attacked by a Hydra and several Slime Walkers (small water monsters).

They also notice a kind of blue monster/ghost with tentacles flying over the water. It came from the other ship and entered theirs. A few moments later, this creature flies away again.

The group manages to kill the monsters.

They call over to the other ship to check below deck. It turns out a fire has been set, and Xambria has disappeared. When the group checks below deck on their own ship, they see that the two prisoners have been killed, and their brains are missing.
