Actually part of what you said was correct about the general rules for advancing, but the part where I need to wait until 19th was incorrect . With retraining rules I can enter at level 18.

And in the game I play in I might even be able to make the change retroactive and swap some EK for AC. We do rebuilds fairly often and I have an ingame transformation ritual magic resource that can plausibly provide a reason for changed stuff. The first step is having the DM approve the prc though.

Yeah, my DM house-ruled that Mage Armor is Abjuration. It is exactly that, though: a house rule. A very reasonable one.
