I disagree;

Lightning Strike
Golden Adept
Dragon Cut

All sound much better to me.

And that's the point.

Those are much much better. They could be improved upon, but they're better than what WotC is coming up with.

I am starting to wonder if they're planning on making money with their Digital Initiative thing by selling a feature that lets people to do global find-and-replaces on their rulebooks.

I'm in just for that. Heck, even if the names didn't suck, I'd love to strike all the "Tenser's" spells for "Vladamir Capuchin's" (or something) spells. It would also be nice to be able to purge the dragonborn and anything related to them. I would have done that in a heartbeat for sorcerer, monk, illithid, or any heritage feats in 3.5.

I think you're missing the point.

This preview suggests that you will be able to play a barbarian who... leaps on his enemies with his bare hands and bites them in the face!

That's much more important to me than an ability name.

The name isn't the most important thing, but I don't think its importance can be totally discarded. Names go a long way toward making an impression.

Say you have the smartest, strongest, most compassionate man on the planet ... and his name is Geraldfexter Goathumper. Great guy ... but when he introduces himself, it's somewhat difficult to maintain a straight face and to take him 100% seriously. Unless he changes his name. Which he would probably do, wouldn't he?

To use an example from baseball (where marketting is more important), could you root for the Omaha Lionhearted Ball Bashers? Even if half of their players were future Hall of Famers? Ok, maybe you could root for -that- team, but could you tell your friends that 'I root for the Omaha Lionhearted Ball Bashers' without feeling like an idiot?

Once they know what they are changing it to, it can be done very simply with a Find-Replace search of the manuscript, which is still in editing.

Either you've never done a lot of work with large manuscripts, or you've never had the misfortune to come across a book that had been mangled by a "simple" Find-Replace function. (Check out the first Mongoose Conan book if you want to see an example.) In either case, unless you are only changing a handful of names, it's really not as easy as you make it out to be -- particularly when you probably have multiple drafts floating around at the same time.

If the phrase were "lightning Strike" I could see this as being a problem as the test in a spell descriptions reading the "The lightning strike upon the target inflicts..." would get changed. I'm willing to bet that the phrases like "Lightning Panther Strike" will not be in the text in other locations to be changed inadvertantly.

And if you have a problem with multiple drafts, you have another issue entirely. There has to be some form of version control or you are pretty much guaranteed to have mistakes crop up between different drafts.

My worst worries now - the system will be great and the names in it will be so lame, I would be ashamed to talk about it with normal persons. Please WotC - it is not too late. Minimize tohose panthers, wyverns and that kind of stuff. It is not cool. It is lame.

Especially powers with three or more words in name are horrible. It is too long. Insted of Lightning panther strike, it might be just lightning stike - not only it is shorter, it is actually cooler.

If I recall correctly, in the Mongoose Conan, Conan does have the ability "Pantherish Twist".

As well as the much more awesome "Crimson Mist" and "To Sail a Road of Blood and Slaughter" class abilities, from his Barbarian and Pirate levels.
