Is that any different to the great axe vs the two hand axes guy though?

I'd sooner see no preferential treatment. Make it a style issue rather than a mechanics issue. Leave mechanics to the slash/ pierce/ bludgeon dimension

I wish they had just made greatsword, maul and greataxe just all use 1d12 and had done with it.

That is what I have done. The d12 needs more love.
