Anyone familiar with Ravenloft? There was a cool NPC - Rudolph von Aubrecker, the living brain -essentially a brain in a jar. He (it?) controlled a sizable portion of a city via psionic domination. It might be worthwhile checking out the old Ravenloft Monstrous Compendium II for plot hooks and adventure ideas.

IIRC there was a RL adventure that the party started as brains in a jar. I think it was the second most powerful lord after strahd, some wizard or lich. You started out in a jar on the shelf in his lab. That sound familiar to anyone? (my favorite RL adventure was thoughts of madness, even though it was nigh impossible)

Use the amalgam template in Advanced Bestiary and merge it with a intellect devourer. When it breaks out of the jar and rips open one the the PCs head, the party should be a little shock.

I once had brain-in-a-jar's being steamtech mecha pilots. It was awesome in a quirky way.

It needs a golem that it can ride around in, secured in a compartment in the abdomen.


Anyway, fun aside - yeah, my suggestion would be psion as well. And lots and lots of minions, puppets, decoys, and allies that don't know its true nature. If you're familiar with Rifts, think something like Archie.
