[Adventure!] Daunton's Dead Past DM: FourMonos. Judge: Peer Committee

Lilli was somewhat heartbroken to see the books gone, but not entirely surprised. The library and laboratory had been where she'd had genuine fun researching and enchanting items, both for herself and others.

Vermitrax's presence and attitude led to Lilli giving a quiet mental "Well played!" to those of the IAC that had probably taken the contents of the building for safer keeping.

She did admonish Vermitrax though, "If there was any property here, I wouldn't necessarily just let you waltz off with it! Also those Igors, you know, sometimes we may have been working for them, so watch yourselves."

Drew keeps to the back of the group, his eyes peeled for the threats to partys back. He doesn't mind the abandoned building and is confident that he can be anywhere in a blink of an eye if the threat presents itself. For now, let the group read, he stalks the shadows far enough so that party has some advance warning if something comes at them.

OOC: stealth, near the walls or around 20-30 feet from the group, keeping to the back or going rounds when they stop (like now)

While others were likely interested in the book, Fhangrim slowly searched the library for secret compartments or anything else out of the ordinary.

Take 10 Perception = 28 or 32 vs traps.

The group more or less moves around the desk, looking to at least glimpse at the book. No particular runes are apparent. No traps, weight dependent mechanisms or collapsing ceilings are detected. In fact, it looks like a book. The number 14 is written on the cover.

Vermitrax evidently becomes bored with the empty building, and apparently with all concerns for safety, stating "I doubt the Igors had prepared explosive runes..." and he opens the book to read with a wave of his hands.

And nothing happens. The group releases its reflexively held breath. A moment passes and no fire explosions or poison gas seeps into the room. Lilli, leader of this part of the expedition by default, as she was a member of the IAC, steps forward and picks up the book.

"Interesting. The stamp here on the inside cover indicates this is a copy. The Chief Igor of the library, Kristoff, made a note. And I quote: By vote of positive 5 to 4, the senior Igors have decided to leave this copy and account of the recent activities in and around Daunton. Should a stray or missing IAC member come to this our previous establishment without knowledge of recent events, or the move to Allaria, they can thus be kept abreast of the situation and join us post-haste in New Daunton."

Flipping the page, Lilli reads on, "History of Daunton, volume 14."

She then starts to leaf through the book, "Curious. It appears the Igors have been keeping track of all activities, particularly arcane, but also political and social changes. The book covers several years. It details the adventures of those who came and went from the Hanged Man. There is a section about a Fey prince and the devils who wished to slay him. A whole section on the great dragon Bosche."

Lilli flips a few more pages, "This is curious, there is a point where a couple dozen adventurers, who had left the tavern on a mission (well apparently several missions) who just didn't come back." She looks up,"I think this referring to us!"

Then reading again, "Of course several more adventurers came to the Hanged Man and some even went out to find their colleagues and friends to no avail. It was around this time that the Igors note a change in the atmosphere of Daunton, something they referred to as "the change". My, that sounds ominous. Well the mood around Daunton became more unpleasant. Several people felt it. Scrying and ritual was unable to determine its source. Basically people became more moody, less happy and they became angry. It was postulated that the change had something to do with Daunton's early history. History before the current chapter of the IAC became located here.

"I'm not sure if it is related, but this is when the swordsman mage Artemis Harks started gaining popularity for his move to retake Allaria. He put all his personal finances, as well as significant money from the Old Families of Daunton to make a major military move against the Hobgoblins of Allaria in an attempt to retake the island of Allaria.

She turns another page, "The attack was successful! Simultaneous invasions of the Hobgoblin cities, lead by the adventurers here in Daunton, smashed the hobgoblin defenses and killed the upper hierarchy of their leadership. It mentions Max, Haruka Sato, Beatrice, Damon Bane, Jarel, Eithel. Wow, lots of people we saw at the Hanged Man.

"Instead of attempting to destroy the hobgoblins, it says here, Artemis Harks then reached out to the remaining leadership. And he sought out the dragonborn of southern Allaria. Together they made an alliance to work together to recreate the empire of Allaria.

"Because of the negativity of the climate here in Duanton, thousands of people left Daunton and moved to the continent of Allaria. The IAC voted and also relocated to New Duanton. Daunton was officially changed to outpost status, but I don't think anyone has been here in years."

Lilli continues, Well now, I didn't expect that. Artemis was one of the first adventurers I met when I arrived here from Arcadia and indeed I was there at the fight to save his soul.

Lilli glances over at Lerrick, "Funny how one's past catches up with one now and again, isn't it?"

"So, there is nothing special about this desertion? No mystique, nothing insidious, no soul draining basement monsters or shadow portals. We can just up and go to this New Daunton?" asks the sorcerer.

"Don't you think it strange that everyone left? Even if the mood soured for some reason, there would be those stubborn enough to remain. Maybe as a village in the vicinity if not the city proper."

Lilli responds to Illarion, "Ha! Well actually, I think it downright suspicious. Soooo, I'm considering and wondering:

One: Where a mind controlling being or monster might lurk and are there any traces of what sort of creature it could be anywhere in the city?
Two: Can we trust the book? I'm leaning towards probably, it likely having some truth about it.
Three: This particular Daunton evolved from a fishing village. (If it matters later, I have a Waterbreathing ritual.) Are there any clues there in the oldest part of town?
Four: Daunton's Great Library really has to be on the list of places for us to visit to check and see if any early historical information can be found regarding this Daunton that may help.
Five: We've currently no idea where this New Daunton is on Allaria and getting of this island to go there might be interesting anyway. As I recall, passing to Bacarte through the Hanged Man is supposed to be temporary visit, subject to later return, but I suppose I could go through, analyse the portal sequence from the other side, return here and then co-opt it for our use. Then again, we might find a usable boat in the docks.
Six: Have outsiders (like those Merchants of Bacarte) visited this city since the fall and what did they find or now think?"
Seven: I'm now worried about this 'change' mentioned in the text affecting us.
Eight: Is this building actually a safer place to camp in than the tavern, should we need to?
Nine: Will Blagarm be alright where he is?

Let's get a move on. There's a few places nearby we could look in while we're here in Cobblestop."

Raiyek nods at several items of Lilli's conjecture. "I agree - even if the inhabitants all felt that they wanted to move of their own will, the fact that everyone went is beyond strange. In fact, your Igor, Kristoff, mentions the atmosphere of negativity as a main reason for the move, which makes no sense. A negative atmosphere is created by the people of the city, unless there's an outside force like a besieging army or famine or so on. If everyone goes, the negativity goes with them; moving is no escape. Also, the fact that several adventurers - us - seemingly disappeared without trace for all this time and apparently have been ... frozen? outside? ... of time until now is incredible! Could the gods have pulled us aside so we would be available now to seek the truth?

"In any case, yes, we should certainly visit the Great Library. At the very least, I am curious to see whether it was emptied in the move as well. At best, for us, all of the books were left and we have free access to all of the knowledge and records there. We can assess where to search next after visiting there. Let us not make plans to leave the city just yet, and have faith that the gods will protect us from the 'change' for long enough to accomplish our task."

The paladin pauses and looks around the room, seemingly assessing the building. "I think this Institute would be a safer place to camp. It does not appear that anyone or anything else came through the wards at the door, which gives us an extra layer of defense if needed. The downside is that the non-mage members of our party may struggle to gain entry if we become separated. The Hanged Man could serve as a rendezvous in that case, though. I do worry about Blagarm as well... perhaps we should invite him to stay here as well? I do not know how much good that will do, though, with us out in the city. He may be safer at the Hanged Man with the few adventurers still there."
