[Adventure!] Daunton's Dead Past DM: FourMonos. Judge: Peer Committee

After Lilli's purposeful manipulation of spells, the gargoyles slowly move back to their previous poses and stop moving. With a click, the door lock opens and the door swings inward.

OOC: Challenge passed. I know that particular test was more mage oriented, but it is an Arcane institute. :)

I'm assuming you enter the building and look around, let me know if otherwise. Follow up post soon.

With a small sigh of relief, Mikara slackens the string on her bow and moves forward to join the others.

She doesn't even look at Vermitrax, but nonchalantly remarks, "See, there you go," as she passes him.

As she steps up alongside Lilli, she bows her head in deference, "Good work m'lady," looks back at Vermitrax and winks.

"What? Cantrips, really? I should have known thosedisgusting Igors couldnt have mustered anything more complicated" the wizard remarks, dissipatinghis magical runes. He lifts an eyebrow at the elf. Is she flitring? Who knows, women are a mystery, bewhatever race they are. He simply walks in, his spellbook and staff following him, apparently on their own.

The cleric adjusts her cloak, takes one last look at the gargoyles, then heads in to the building following the necromancer. While doing so she successfully resists temptation of grabbing the floating staff. However, she sports an impish smile for thinking of such a crazy thought.

Raiyek utters a small sigh, echoing Mikara, when the doors finally open. He had been preparing to step into the banter as well if Lerrick's admonishing didn't calm things down, but he had held his tongue to avoid further breaking the mages' concentration on the task at hand. The paladin follows the others in - as the door had clearly shown, this place was not his element, belonging more to the mages.

However, even though the first challenge was passed, Raiyek kept on alert. One never knows what mages are up to behind closed doors; and besides, the entire reason for their visit to the Institute is because something definitely strange was going on in Daunton. "Stay on your guard, everyone," he cautions. Towards the members of the Institute he directs the question, "Do things appear to be in order inside?"
[sblock=OOC]If the others would prefer Raiyek at the front, he'll gladly step up as meat shield. ;) I just figured it would be more appropriate to have our various mages lead the way here, especially as some of them are actually members here.

Also, a Perception roll to see if Raiyek notices anything seemingly out of place once inside:

Illarion shrugs, lowering his dagger, not blasting the guardian with an attack spell.

"Not really well thought out. If there were less mages and more swordmages, bladesingers, sorcerers and other variuos tastes of the arcane life, we would be forced to use other spells. Of course, maybe the door would open regardless of the spell."

He follows the paladin, tapping his staff gently in front of him.

"True, but wizards and mages are the ones that perform the important research, and the gross of the Institute's population. Not that I was ever a member, my research has taken an alley that doesn't appeal to the authorities of the institute; however I did tried to get some resources from them once." Vermitrax explains.

The group enters the building somewhat tentatively, but soon discover the concerns are unwarranted. The building is empty of inhabitants. True to anticipation, the internal aspects of the IAC is much larger than would appear from the outside. The entrance hall itself stretches sixty feet across and has vaulted fifteen foot ceilings. As appropriate to an Arcane institute, the decorations are sparse, mostly consisting of various tapestries. Perhaps the really juicy items are stored in a research laboratory?

Pretty much as a group, the party moves from room to room. The dining area still has tables aligned in the normal positions. The chairs were placed upside down on the tables, as if someone cleaned and stored them, not anticipating use in the near future. The kitchen area is quiet. The large cooking oven sits cold. The dry storage is cleaned out. But not as if in a haste or hurry, almost as if it too were a scheduled task that was completed and then the area cleaned.

The rooms on the second and third floors sit empty, single beds with the mattresses rolled up. No sheets or bedclothes apparent. A quick look through the bureaus and drawers reveal that all the items have been removed.

Similarly, the laboratories in the basement are cleaned, agents and utensils removed and overall empty.

Perhaps the biggest shock to Lilli is the discovery of the library. Or really, how empty the room that once held the library is now. The shelves still in place, but void of book or parchment. The desk at the center of the room, always manned by a competent Igor sits empty. A single book sits on the desk, cover closed.

Mikara is way out of her element, but she's aware of her role within the group,

[sblock=Perception]Perception 1d20+12=19. Poor Mik is not having good luck with the dice.[/sblock]

She moves forward to Lilli, and taps Drew on the shoulder as she moves forward. The book appears normal enough, but Mikara still doesn't like the look of things.

"Perhaps this is a message from your friends.
Perhaps this book is not quite what it seems.
Maybe the gargoyles weren't their only test.
These people took great pains to reach these ends.

I'm not sure what I'm seeing when I look,
I see no glaring hints of hidden traps."

She turns back to Drew and motions him to come forward.

"Hey Drew! Could you inspect this tome with me,
to make sure nothing jumps out from this book?"

"Interesting, I hoped to find some valuable items here, at least ingredients and books. A pity." he rolls his eyes at the overcautious Mikara. "Ahk!" Vermitrax says, pushing his way through. "I doubt the Igors had prepared explosive runes..." and he opens the book to read with a wave of his hands.
