"If you want me to try and follow that trail from last night, we should get moving," Brenn said from the doorway as they waited for the man to pack for his expedition.

>If we try to follow the trail from last night, Perception check is 1d20+19 (base +17 +2 from Seeking Falcon aspect)= 39 (Crit success!); roll Roll Lookup

The party (with Luc in tow) decide to use Brenn's expert tacking ability to track the strange source of the smell that was at the inn last night. Dorn shows Brenn the spot with the tracks they found, as well as the bits of rotting tissue.

Brenn quickly finds the trail and track it to the cemetery. One again the party is greeted with the sight of tombstones and the many mausoleums. The tracks stop at a very old statue, that of an angel with outstretched arms and wings.

He is about to investigate it further, when sudden a scream shatters the morning air!

GM: As the winds and coming storm are making a lot of noise, it is difficult to know in what direction the scream came from. Everyone please make a perception check (DC unknown) in secret (you can use sblocks) to discern the direction.

After you roll I want you to decide what course of action your character is going to take. You only have a split second to decide and timing counts. Will you follow your instinct and head in the direction it you think it came from? Follow another PC? (again not knowing what they rolled) Wait and see what happens? Or any other course of action you wish.

SOMETHING OVER THERE IS EXCITED FOR COMBAT! Sir Exsixten bellows, drawing his axe and charging heedlessly off towards the sound of the scream. STAY RIGHT THERE WHATEVER YOU ARE, BATTLE IS ON ITS WAY.

Jax points at where he thinks the scream came from. "It came from there!" Regardless of which direction his allies go (if anywhere), Jax leaps ahead of the pack to get to the danger.

Since the kobold had already pointed in the right direction, Brenn began to move as well, angling around to determine what was going on.

>Perception check, including bonus from Seeking Falcon aspect= 1d20+19= 33, roll Roll Lookup
>Brenn will approach the source of the sound, moving at a angle instead of straight ahead, but will stop as soon as he can see anything relevant- he will not close to melee (or even an easy charge range). Continue Seeking Falcon aspect so speed is 9; remember allies within 5 squares of Brenn get a +1 bonus to Perception check (probably most of the group on this initial roll) and Brenn himself cannot be surprised (Alertness feat).

OOC: Sir Exsixten doesn't make perception checks. He's totally sure he knows what's going on and doesn't like little things like "facts" intruding on his version of reality.

So, Passive Perception: 13.

Andras looks around cautiously, then moves to follow Jax and Brenn. Even if they aren't going the right way, it wouldn't be safe to split up.

While Sir ExSixTen turns and runs in the opposite direction, the party quickly heads towards the town. Jax, Brenn and Andras run quickly rush through the cemetery gate but Dorn misjudges where the sound is coming from and almost runs into a solid wall. Meanwhile Sir ExSixTen finds a large mausoleum decorated by harmless gargoyles statues made of stone...

Jax, Brenn and Andras arrive at a house close by the cemetery. They spot a black-cloaked madman whose executor's style hood conceals his face completely. He has just stabbed a young woman who is laying on the ground next to the house, but he has yet to finish her off. On spotting the party he flees down a nearby alley. The case in on!

[sblock=Skill Challenge: After the Madman: Round One]
You have saved the life of the young women, but the murderer is escaping! You must rush after him to try to stop him with any means possible.

Only Andras, Brenn and Jax may participate since they succeeded the perception check. You get three individual successes each before one failure. If your PC fails the check for that round you lag behind the others and are out of the skill challenge. XP will be rewarded to the whole group (next time I pass it out) depending on how well you do.

Round 1: Skill DC 19
You may use any skills you can justify, but I may add a penalty if it does not fit the situation ("I use nature to feel the grass being damaged as he steps on it"). Repeating the same skill check the next round imposes a cumulative -2 penalty to the check.

Brenn had his first arrow drawn halfway back when the fleeing madman turned the corner, momentarily out of sight. With a muttered curse in Elvish, Brenn headed off in pursuit- even by elven standards he moved with unusual speed and grace. The killer was fast, though, and the village was unfamiliar... At the first corner, Brenn paused for a moment, focusing his senses as he had been taught by some of the best scouting instructors in the Imperium. "Come on, he went this way!," he snarled over his shoulder to the other pursuers.

>Using Perception to determine where the madman has run off to; 1d20+19 (including Seeking Falcon bonus)= 25; roll Roll Lookup
>Remember, if Jax or Andras also use Perception, they get a +1 bonus from Group Awareness.
>While Brenn currently has Speed 9, he will keep pace with his new compatriots rather than run headlong into an ambush alone. If at any point he has a clean shot at the fleeing madman, he will use Clever Shot to attempt to inflict Slowed (save ends) on the target- not sure how that would work in a skill challenge (possibly use an attack roll instead of a skill check to gain a success?) but, tactically, that would be in his plans.
