Ageism in gaming

Now I will freely admit my character is always stirring things up but that is because she is always right and the rest of you are evil and wrong

See? This is why I don't like playing with "older" players. Always causing trouble! So closed minded.

I hate to point this out but you are wrong it is not because I am old it is because I am a female and face it women are always right and men are always evil and wrong.

The sooner men learn this the better the world will be for everyone.

Come on everyone knows it is not a Y chrosome but a broken X.:D

BTW you are not running the game this weekend are you because if you are I am only joking?

and definitely aren't going to want to change the way they act or to have to (even if only potentially) deal with a pissed-off parent. Might not be fair, but it's definitely not stupid

Yeah, I can completely identify with this statement. In my case the problem isn't the players themselves but the new and growing babies of the players :( After a hard day at work being very nice to people I like to have a few beers and drop some F-bombs. Unfortunately the DM's wife has called for a disarmament treaty ;)

I see a BIG problem in cutting out "kids" from games. I'm only 17 myself, but I think that if you cut out an age group, ESPECIALLY younger people, you're killing the game. Without "kids" where will the game go? How will we get new players if the older players refuse to play with younger players to teach them?

I can understand things like beer and language...but really, there are adults who get more offended with that than anyone. Just remember, "Generalizations are always bad":D.

Younger players can do just as well, if not better, than older players. And the comfort level shouldn't be applied to an age...because personality can change everything, and you might find someone below your "age range" that's a great person to game with. All I'm saying is, don't cut off the game from the younger players!

One of my flaws that I am quite aware of is my rampant ageism. I REALLY have a hard time taking anyone under 25 seriously. I have tried very hard to correct this problem of mine, and I have, in general, succeeded. BUT, every now and then I find myself shrugging something off because the person who suggested it was younger than myself.

Now, I should also add that I currently game with some quite young gamers and they have taught me the error of my mindset. Heck, my new DM is 10 years old.

Heck, I have a hard time taking anyone seriously, under 25 or not. :D

- Being taken seriously by HellHound, if just barely Darkness

Right or wrong, a group of (to use a game I was in last year as an example) 25-30 year old foul-mouthed guys with jobs and families that like to grab a few beers during a game once in a while and require regular smoke breaks isn't going to feel comfortable playing with a 16 year old around - and definitely aren't going to want to change the way they act or to have to (even if only potentially) deal with a pissed-off parent. Might not be fair, but it's definitely not stupid.

Exactly. And those guys probably wouldn't like my game, which consists of a bunch of librarians, who, though sometimes foul-mouthed, don't smoke and only drink water at the table. And that's ok. Private groups of people can legitimatly choose any criteria they please to select other members.

They may be missing some potentially good players, and good friends thereby, but there you have it.

Everyone in my current campaign (of which I am not the DM for a change!) is 22 or younger. We have a few new recruits who have never gamed before. It's a lot of fun to teach new players, helps keep things fresh and new.

Some of us have played together since age 13. The first time I ever played D&D was durring a very boring and slow social studies course in which we had lots of extra free time. Me and another friend gamed durring class in our free time!

It is ignorant to deny young players, and it only serves to hurt the game and the genre as a whole.

I would gladly accept players as young as 10 (or anyone for that matter who has basic reading and mathematic skills).

P-Kitty, not only do I run V&V I'm a big Elementals fan, one of my favorite comics (if you have afew hours to kill, get me into a conversation about comics).

I'd gladly run it for an EnWorld Gameday, even it wasn't in sunny Florida, in early March... which is when my birthday is.... ;)

On the ageism thing, who here wouldn't want to play with Colonel Playdoh? Who here wouldn't want to play with Hellhound's kids (the ones that write for Ambient)? What I care abot is a fun game, I think that's possible at any point on the whole age scale.. in fact... wouldn't it be cool to play with the Colonel and Hellhound's kids in a single game? Oh yeah...

I love the Elementals... I used to have the entire run, but alas, sold it several years ago. Great comic... :)
