Allies?

So, new question: What defines an ally?

If I use a power that has an effect on my allies, am I considered an ally? If I'm a shaman, and I use a power through my Spirit Companion that has a beneficial effect on adjacent allies, and I am adjacent, do I receive said benefits?

I would assume yes. But I've been wrong before.

Discuss.

When a power’s target entry specifies that it affects
you and one or more of your allies, then you can take
advantage of the power’s effect along with your teammates.
Otherwise, “ally” or “allies” does not include
you,
and both terms assume willing targets. “Enemy”
or “enemies” means a creature or creatures that aren’t
your allies (whether those creatures are hostile toward
you or not). “Creature” or “creatures” means allies and
enemies both, as well as you.

As you can see, the answer is no. You are not your own ally.

Shaman have to be very attentive, because most of their effects aren't going to help them - just their allies. I've DMed for two different shamans and there's an awful lot of 'No, you don't get that healing' and 'No, you don't get those temp hp'. It's a bit frustrating.

Heh, ok. Thanks for your answers! I imagined that to be the case but figured I'd ask anyway.

I know! As a player, its way frustrating to have no reason to be positioned anywhere near the battle.

This is why I got the gm to house rule that adjacent to spirit abilities help out both me and my spirit if I am actually adjacent to it. The added power is countered by the fact that I'm no longer bunkered down 20 squares from the action staring through a peephole completely unlikely to ever be targeted.

Lurkers were made for that exact situation.
