Am I the only one who does not like the Great Wheel?

Chalk me up for another person who dislikes the planes. They've always seemed like a glorified playground that's like the Prime Material plane but with:
A. Bigger and better monsters worth more XP
and
B. Plenty of condescention for "primes" in order to make the PCs feel like they're they've arrived in a better arena than the one they were in before and disguise the fact that the only thing that has changed is the scale, the CRs, and the level of magic.

I suppose they work as a mechanic for putting lots of powerful monsters in the world but not ruining it for low-level adventure but, in the end, it destroys the fantastic nature of the planes since they're simply the arena for high level adventurers rather than the eternal reward of the blessed dead or the punishment of the unfaithful, etc. If hell is just like earth but with severed heads, pits of lava and entrails substituted for gardens, stepping stones, and wall posters, it seems to me that the numinous has been replaced by the merely ordinary.

No no, you see that's the way that EPIC people think of the planes. That the planes are just a newer, bigger playground for them to beat up newer and better and even other EPIC people on.

Planescape's take on the planes anyways moved away from that type of number crunching hack'a'thon that sadly some folks *cough*onthewotcepiclevehandbookboards*cough* seem to embrace wholeheartedly. Plot, story and character development are more important than bigger and better fights. Maybe my own planar games are an abberation from the norm, but I go sessions without a single fight and half the time those games tend to leave the players more anxious for the next week's game just to find out how things will advance.

*chuckle w/ a bit of pointed spite towards that type of player*

Well, I guess you could say I do not like the flavor of the planes. They just seem so dull and unfantastic to me. The only plane i like is the Far Realms, if I were to make a homebrew world though. The Far Realms would just be the deep reaches of space, cause I do happen to like Spelljammer, I would just get rid of that plane thingy in it. :)

You may not be the only one to dislike the planes, but does anyone else dislike the Great Wheel because it always gets that stupid Journey song stuck in their head when they read it?

*whimper* Why oh why did you have to get that song stuck in my head now. Curse you... *purges mind with alcohol consumption and random music that is not Journey*

I'm a bit ambivalent about the Great Wheel. I love Planescape, but if I'm running a game that's based on the Prime I'd rather have a cosmology that's adapted to the setting.

Either I've been living in a cave or you guys are showing your age...

What's the song?

Heh, I'm not showing my age, I'm grumbling about the song in spite of my age. It was before my time, I'm just familiar enough with it to get it stuck in my head. *chuckle*
