Chalk me up for another person who dislikes the planes. They've always seemed like a glorified playground that's like the Prime Material plane but with:
A. Bigger and better monsters worth more XP
and
B. Plenty of condescention for "primes" in order to make the PCs feel like they're they've arrived in a better arena than the one they were in before and disguise the fact that the only thing that has changed is the scale, the CRs, and the level of magic.
I suppose they work as a mechanic for putting lots of powerful monsters in the world but not ruining it for low-level adventure but, in the end, it destroys the fantastic nature of the planes since they're simply the arena for high level adventurers rather than the eternal reward of the blessed dead or the punishment of the unfaithful, etc. If hell is just like earth but with severed heads, pits of lava and entrails substituted for gardens, stepping stones, and wall posters, it seems to me that the numinous has been replaced by the merely ordinary.
