Early level Bards have access to the sleep spell, which is a phenomenal CC and on demand critical hit generator. Several crits if you are fighting low HP enemies.

I know. Sleep isn't damage though.

I was one of the first to call out how great bards are back when 5E landed.
Not the best at damage.

Any additional damage dealt to the sleeping enemy, including a missed attack that turns into a successful attack, counts as the Bard's damage.

Kinda that wasn't the point of my statement.

Never claimed bards were bard or ineffective. One of the first 5E characters I saw was a bard and she used sleep.

Bards need other characters to help them get their damage, is the point.
Bards can use weapons like anybody else. The only major gap is level 5, when the Paladin gets a second attack and 2nd level spells to smite with. Then level 6 rolls around.
I just said bards aren't great at damage. They're more than capable of indirect damage. Never claimed they weren't.
Indirect damage is damage.
