An odd idea...

What would happen if: Bab didn't increase with level, but instead it was a skill, such as *skill: Attack(Melee) modified by STR, and Attack(Ranged) modifed by DEX.
What would happen then?

This would, obviously, make combat more skill based, so that high strength, low INT brutes would be so almighty in combat.

Well, that and it would increase the incentive even more to take one level of ranger/barbarian and then swap out to rogue.

Interesting. I agree that it would make rogues even more popular than they are now though.

Maybe you could put some sort of class restriction on it. Perhaps say it is a class skill for fighter types, but a CC skill for non-fighter types. THat way, the rogue's large skill alotment can still cause them to be the middle-ground fighters (better than wizards, worse than fighters).

What would you do about clerics though?? They don't get a lot of skill points, and they are not strictly "fighter types."

Several things would more than likely need to happen. First, since BAB is no longer an automatic thing, then more skill points would need to be given to each class. Also, this would need to be made into something of a special skill, like SPEAK LANGUAGE -- meaning that the cost was class dependent, and a maximum of 1 rank is able to be gained at each level.

I suppose, you could do it something like this:

Class_______ - Skill Points - BAB Cost
Barbarian... - 05 + Int/lvl - 1 pt
Bard........ - 05 + Int/lvl - 2 pts
Cleric...... - 03 + Int/lvl - 3 pts
Druid....... - 05 + Int/lvl - 3 pts
Fighter..... - 03 + Int/lvl - 1 pt
Monk........ - 07 + Int/lvl - 2 pts *
Paladin..... - 03 + Int/lvl - 1 pt
Ranger...... - 05 + Int/lvl - 1 pt
Rogue....... - 09 + Int/lvl - 3 pts
Sorcerer.... - 03 + Int/lvl - 3 pts
Wizard...... - 03 + Int/lvl - 3 pts

* Monk must also pay for Attack (Hand-to-Hand)

Although, doing it this way, makes one wonder why Saves, for example, would not be handled the same way... eventually, the whole class structure would need to eb scrapped and replaced with a single 'classless' class to build your character from.

Not that this have to be a bad thing, mind you.

Don't know what you think of this but....

You could give some classes a alotment of skill points seperate from their normal amount. This would act as full skill points for melee and 1/2 for normal skills.

Making a melee combat skill that was cross class for rogues/wizards etc might help.

OGL, no.

d20STL, yes.

...and so you would not be able to put the game out as a "d20" game, but you could release it, none-the-less.

Ok, so maybe some minor tweaks. Combat(melee), and Combat(Ranged) could be class skills for the Fighter, Barbarian, and Paladin.
For all other classes, Combat(melee) would be cross-class.
For all classes except Rogue and Ranger, Combat(Ranged) would also be cross-class.
For all classes except Monks, Combat(Hand-to-Hand) would be cross-class.

My reasoning for not doing Saves this same way is that saves are not something you CONSCIOUSLY improve, they are more instinctive, you get better at them from experience. Therefore, they are Level-based.

If those changes were made, whaddaya think?
