I have read of a mountain man who sawed off his own leg- caught in a bear trap- to reach civilization & treatment...

And as you may recall, there was recently a repeat of the same when guy who was hiking and got pinned by a boulder. He had to cut off his own arm below the elbow. He even got in the "Man Law" commercials because of it.
